Hey, two rockers today! Well, one of the rockers is singing country, but…
And two acts that most people (looking toward New Jersey
) have heard of, at least. I alternate every day so you don’t have to endure the country music first, so let’s get started with today’s rock song!
Creeque Alley - the Mamas & the Papas
This was the last top ten hit. Wow.
Even “Dream a Little Dream of Me” didn’t make the top ten.
This is also one of the catchiest music histories you’ll ever hear. Probably the only music encyclopedia you can sing along with.
Everyone mentioned in the song, from the Lovin’ Spoonful to the Byrds and the New Christy Minstrel Singers (“McGuinn [Byrds] and McGuire [New Christy] just a-gettin’ higher [a reference to the Byrds’ “Eight Miles High”] in L.A., you know where that’s at”), is real.
You have a lot of autobiographical songs out there in music, and this is one of the best.
Creeque Alley
Written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips
Recorded by the Mamas & the Papas
From Deliver, 1967
Peak chart position: #5
Today’s country song: “The Box It Came In”

Pretty darn near it! What harmonies, and how many other bands would make fun of themselves like this?

Yes! and Yes! If I were ever to get a good singing voice, one of the people I would hope that I could sound like would be Cass Elliot. What a set of pipes!!! Have a good week.
