And now, something that REALLY doesn’t go with country music. Yes, I know this sounds ridiculous next to a Porter Wagoner song from the 1960s, but my mind doesn’t think that way. As Duke Ellington said, “There are only two kinds of music: good and bad.” Both of these are good in my opinion. Yes, even if they do sound ridiculous next to each other.
Eminence Front - The Who
This song bombed big time, only reaching #68 on the Hot 100 chart. Can we blame the fact that Pete Townshend sang lead on it for the failure?
In the promotional video (linked below) you’ll see Roger Daltrey playing guitar. You may not know he initially auditioned for The Who to BE their lead guitarist instead of lead singer. Yeah, but Pete and smashing and it’s hard to twirl a guitar the way Daltrey twirls a microphone…
One of many songs in the early 80s about the excessive drug use of the 70s, Townshend said he didn’t remember “whether I was pointing the finger at myself or the drug dealers of Miami Beach.”
He survived, thankfully. (John Entwistle the bassist, sadly, did not, succumbing to a cocaine-induced heart attack at the age of 57.
) And we got one great song about whomever Pete was mad at.

Written by Pete Townshend
Recorded by The Who
From It’s Hard, 1982
Peak chart position: #68
Today’s country song: “The Cold Hard Facts of Life”

@porwest — weird gives good music. Tommy couldn’t have come from the Brill Building songwriters.

@FourWalls I will say, Pete Townshend WAS one of the wierder of rock and roll guys. Talented. But weird.
