It’s a two-for-one special today with the country song, because not only is this song performed by a Hall of Fame singer, it was written by a Hall of Fame songwriter! (And it’s not Bill Anderson!
) This is one that’s probably disappeared into history for most people, but it remains one of my favorites. Here’s today’s country song.
Come Sundown - Bobby Bare
And let’s welcome Kris Kristofferson to the list! He’ll be back as a songwriter, too.
About the only thing I “got” in the film Taxi Driver was Cybill Shepherd’s character’s love of Kristofferson. She quotes his great line from “The Pilgrim: Chapter 33”: “He’s a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction.” Other than that…that movie was total meh for me.
Kristofferson simply KNOWS how to write a line. How about “Feelin’ near as faded as my jeans” in “Me and Bobbie McGee”? And in here we have the pain-dripped line “And I curse the sun for rising,” followed by “this mornin’ she’s just leavin’ but come sundown she’ll be gone.”
And holy cow, does Bobby Bare deliver it perfectly! He was on Mercury Records for a short stint, and this was one of his hits for that label before he went back to RCA.
As I said, it’s not well remembered as far as Bobby Bare hits go (those are usually “Marie Laveau” and “Detroit City”), but, for me, this is a knockout.
Come Sundown
Written by Kris Kristofferson
Recorded by Bobby Bare
From This Is Bare Country, 1970
Peak chart position: #7
Today’s rock song: “End of the Line”

Absolutely. And I love the story about him landing the helicopter on Cash’s lawn to pitch “Sunday Morning Coming Down” to him.

Bare had a great career, and you may have heard Kristofferson do the song.

There are a lot of these songs that haven’t been heard much since their chart days. That’s sad, not just for the song in question, but for everyone. There’s so much more to all of these singers than the “one big hit.”
