Today’s two songs might sound like they’re on the wrong charts. The rock song has a country flavor (sorry, Linda ), and this song is very well known for all the pop covers of it. Confused? Me too. Here’s today’s song from the favorite charted country list. Crying in the Chapel - Darrell Glenn This song started in a hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, where Artie Glenn was recovering from spinal surgery. He prayed for healing and received the answer to his prayer. In gratitude, he stopped at the first church he saw to pray. The song came to him immediately as he drove home. His teenage son, Darrell, recorded the song in 1953. Stations in Fort Worth played it, then it got picked up nationwide. Then everybody started recording it. Rex Allen’s version was on the chart at the same time as Glenn’s version, and June Valli and the Orioles both had hit renditions at the same time. Oh, and that Pelvis guy recorded it, too, in the 60s. Because I’m me this was the first version of this song that I heard. Given that, it’s the version I go to. This was Darrell Glenn’s only hit. He died of cancer at the age of 54 in 1990. His father, Artie, died in 1994. Boy, what a great song that father-son combo gave us! Crying in the Chapel Written by Artie Glenn Recorded by Darrell Glenn Released as a single, 1953 Peak chart position: #4 Today’s rock song: “Garden Party” Get down on your knees and pray:

I know the Elvis version. In these days, nobody would be shocked by his movements.

@FourWalls I agree. When I was young, only bad guys had tattoos. And earrings (a pair) were for girls.

Give the poor kid a break, he was still in high school and his dad probably made him dress like that.

I was well into my 20s before I ever heard Elvis’ version. This is the version I grew up with, so it’s the one I prefer.

Most people haven’t heard the original, since he was a one-hit wonder and there were so many more famous people who covered it later.
