A weird psychiatrist

So... I have mood swings and I feel like crying sometimes. I am in a bad shape on some of the days. Especially before exams. I told this to my boyfriend and he took me to his psychiatrist.
Psychiatrists are supposed to create a friendly environment for the patients to talk. I started with the fact that I have anxiety problems regarding upcoming exams. He said "What can I do about it? I too had exams and stress is normal during exams." I was going to tell him the rest that I start having these symptoms 4-5 months before exams. But this comment put me off and I felt like walking out and asking the hospital authorities to return the 1600 INR that my boyfriend paid for this appointment.
Okay, so then my boyfriend chipped in and told him the details. And I don't know the doctor did not create a proper environment for me to really open up and say.
So anyways he prescribed medicines which cost another 1100 INR. Took those meds but don't know it will serve any purpose or not. I am going back to my original belief that most doctors just want money, thats it!
I am an introvert. I take a lot of time to open up and say these things infront of strangers. So these types of psychiatrists will not work for me!! I am never going to any psychiatrist again unless he/she is my school friend or something.
Bad idea it was! My bf tried his best and he has a lot of faith on this psychiatrist, but I don't. I will update if these medicines have any effect on me.
Have you ever visited a psychiatrist? What was your experience?

It sounds like your boyfriend really cares about you. I would not go back to somebody who dismisses your concerns and make you feel that your feelings don't matter. There are online counselors you might want to search. Some are covered by insurance. I wish you the best because you matter. Keep your boyfriend around because he cares,

Yeah I am really lucky to have him in my life. But that counselor was a deal-breaker! I am never ever consulting him for God's sake!4 people like this

@Dreamerby You could ask for someone else who has more sensitivity.

@akalinus There's actually no concept of insurance on these consultations in India. As far as I know. There are both private and government hospitals and the doctors have their own clinics. So, I went to a private hospital to take his consultation based on the reviews. It turned out to be a fiasco!

Here in India its a stigma. There aren't really good psychiatrists in the city.

I have found them rather unhelpful, as they are often full of their own opinions, and think they know it all.
They usually do not give you much time, and will take phone calls during a session too, or just leave you to fill out a questionnaire. The paid for hour is usually less than than that, and only around 45 minutes to 50 minutes, at most.
They never give you more than that, and are more in it for the money than to really help anyone, I suspect.
I found them all next to useless, but some free phone counselling services here are better, if I get a caring, and competent person, on the other end of the line.

Yes. He, too, called the receptionist, I guess, to ask him how many more patients were waiting outside. I forgot to mention that in the post. Unless someone has something really serious, like dementia or something similar, the psychiatrists aren't of any help!

Thankfully, I have never been to a psychiatrist.
Ironically, you were worse off by seeing the psychiatrist's attitude but hopefully, the medicines work for you.
My take is one needs luck to meet with a helpful doctor, government official, etc.

Lets talk about your problem first. You feel anxiety due to exams - is it because of fear of not passing the exams? or is it you would not get good marks ? or is it because of some experience which gets you anxious when you see exams?. If it is a "yes" to first two , then I would say spend just 3 hours daily studying and 30 minutes teaching your mind or someone what you studied. That should help you on long run. Perhaps it is because you have been compared to others who might be getting marks. Do not bother , life is a long journey - just because of marks you may not get always get the coveted lifestyle. Medicines ,well you could try , however you need to become brave to counter your issues and luckily you have a good boyfriend who cares! Good luck!

I think they just have different approach, but may that doctor was not able to deliver the right words or approach to you. Anyway i hope that you will not take any medicine, and just stay strong... I know school is very stressful and the pressure keeps pushing us to our limits. I hope you find your balance, and I hope you will overcome your thoughts and emotions.
I don't know, when I am also studying I felt pressured but I remember a classmate told me, failure is part of the student's life, not because I am slow or weak, but sometime life's happens and it is an early training for the real world outside school. And yes it is really true.
I hope you can find a better doctor soon, but I really pray that this time it will really help you in overcoming your circumstances. God bless and have a great day.

@Dreamerby I guess so, nobody will really understand us the way we understand ourselves. Anyway I hope you get a better doctor. God bless.

Also I have another chronic problem of IBS-C (acute constipation with digestion issues). Its making life so much difficult. Nobody would really understand the problems I deal with unless they are facing the same.

I wonder why some doctors--whatever their specialty--are in their professions at all sometimes. A psychiatrist/therapist should definitely have a better attitude than that.

The irony in the phrase "crazy psychiatrist". Looks like they could not treat themselves.

Yeah. The medicines are over by the way. He prescribed meds for 10 days and 1 SOS medication.
