While the rock song returns us to the Hall of Fame for the artist, over here on the country side I’m on the fourth consecutive act that’s in the Country Music Hall of Fame. (Tomorrow’s performer is also a Hall of Famer.) And, gee, will you look at this, another harmony act.
Back for their second appearance on the list, here’s today’s song.
I’ll Go to My Grave Loving You - Statler Brothers
The Statler Tissue Company was located in Augusta, Maine. As a company, they are long defunct; however, their name lives on forever in music. It was a box of Statler Tissues that gave these guys their name. Just think: if they’d been in a different hotel room they might have been the Puffs Brothers or the Kleenex Brothers!
There actually were two brothers in the Statler Brothers: Harold and Don Reid. Both of them had a hand in this song. Harold (the bass singer) wrote a gospel song called “He Went to the Cross Loving You.” Don, who sings lead on this, turned it into a secular love song.
And what a love song. This was a new song for their “greatest hits” album. In the liner notes they said that the songs were what their record company considered “the best of the Statler Brothers.” To them, however, the four women on the cover of the album — their wives — “are the real best of the Statler Brothers.”
Isn’t that sweet. And isn’t this great.
I’ll Go to My Grave Loving You
Written by Don Reid
Recorded by the Statler Brothers
From The Best of the Statler Brothers, 1975
Peak chart position: #3
Today’s rock song: “Long Long Time”

I think “When the Grass Grows Over Me” is a better take on it than “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” (Since I’m past the H’s you can see that it didn’t make the list.)
