Into ANOTHER Grocery Store

Yesterday I had planned on making an Aldi run as there were a few items I had on my list that I get there since they have the best price on those particular items. We wound up making an impromptu stop at Walmart since my wife said she had a prescription ready there for pickup. I was just going to drop her off and wait, but then she was like, "Don't you need beer or something?" I was reluctant because I can't walk out of Walmart without dropping at least a Grant. And there WERE a couple of Walmart items on my list I COULD get that I didn't need right away. Fine. I went in. $75 later we walked out. Today we will go to Ruler because my mom says she needs some things and she was not able to go yesterday. So, that's three "grocery" stores in two days. I only put it in quotes since of course Walmart is not just groceries. Oh well, I have items at Ruler on my list as well, AND I'd like to get some eggs if they still have them for $1.99 like they did last week.

I did a quick shop at No Frills yesterday on my way home from Hamilton. I got a little Black Forest cake, some yogurt, ice cream on a stick, and potato chips... just the essentials.

What I have found that works very well for me is to know my prices and coordinate my shopping at multiple stores based on what I need and who has the best price. I never run out of things since I keep enough stock of the best priced items so that by the time they go on my list to be replaced, I can better coordinate what store I need to go to replace them before I run out.

@porwest Easy enough to do when you drive or have someone willing to drive you to more than one store.

I buy the most expensive bread in my supermarket. I ask for bread and then start to think about nice things I´d like to have. Like you, I end up with a lot of money less in my pocket. But happy.

@porwest In the winter I buy a package of frozen bread with 5 loaves in it. It only cost $5.99, or $1.20 per loaf. And, we get fresh baked bread! That is cheaper than the generic breads in our stores here.

@porwest The bread I like best is one of the cheapest. But when I add to the list the cheeses, the ham and all the other sort of things I love, it becomes the most expensive one I could imagine.

See, now, when it comes to bread I buy the cheapest I can find which is typically Smart-Way wheat at Ruler for $1.19 a loaf. But we all have our "treats," and as I always like to say, save on the things you need so you can afford the things you want. It's a system that works out quite well.

@porwest I've had issues with a few things there lately. One is milk, which is going bad in 2 days here. I don't think it is my refrigerator, as I have had eggs frozen in the last week and nothing else spoiled. This has been happening for several months now. So they are either letting milk sit there before putting it in refrigerator or their unit is going out. Another thing is with Pita Bread. Bought some last trip in July. EXP. date late Aug. Went to open it last night and it is molding already. GRRR.

@kareng It might be something about that particular store. Luckily we have several in the area, in fact 4 that are rather close together, so if I started to run into any trouble with stuff, I could check out the other stores and see if it was an Aldi problem or a location problem. But that would irk me to no end and cause me to change my shopping choices a bit as well.

Aldi is a pretty good store. Of course, it's like any place you go to, you have to know your prices to know if Aldi has the best price on whatever it is you are buying.

How much gas do you burn driving around to all these places? Lol

@porwest I figured you probably did do the math. I'm like you, I usually won't drive around to multiple places in a day. Often, I will just make a list of things I need, and then if I know I'll be in a certain part of town I'll check and see if I can knock off anything on my list while I'm in that part of town. For instance, last night my daughter needed to pick up some supplies at Hobby Lobby, so while we were in that area I stopped at a store nearby and grabbed a few things on my list. It saved me from having to drive there separately on my own.

No more than I would if I went to one store, and I have actually done the math. It costs little to nothing. But it's partly because of the way I do it ultimately. It's rare I hit more than one store in a day. I shop according to what I need and who has the best price, but when something goes on my list I am not out of said item, I am just close to being out, so it's not like once it goes on the list it has to be replaced right away. I take great care in saving money, and I think that has worked out very well for me because I don't assume things like the cost of gas to do what I do. I have actually sat down and done the math. lol

@moffittjc When you manage your pantry, your household, and your finances like a business, you are bound to do well all around. At least that's what I always found.

@thislittlepennyearns When I visited Florida and walked into a Dollar General Market, the prices were horrible. The only reason I shopped there was because in the areas we were in, there weren't alternatives.

One of the most expensive stores on the planet. lol When it comes to food anyway. Fun to walk around though, although I usually don't walk away with much of anything.

I makeup three lists, combine them, and do all kinds of calculations before I put on my monthly Walmart order. It is coming up at the beginning of December, and I want to have some cake or cookies for Christmas.

I only need one list. But whatever the item happens to be, I know who has the best price and I get those items in those places when I am there.
