Here’s wishing you who are celebrating a happy, peaceful, and blessed Thanksgiving day. I’m having a good day, eating the turkey I got yesterday at Mark’s, along with the trimmings. This list isn’t taking a holiday, though, so here’s the next song on my list of favorite songs to have made the country music Billboard chart.
Waltz Across Texas - Ernest Tubb
Some trivia: Ernest Tubb played himself in the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter. He started in the 30s, but by the time I came along he was in his 50s, so he always looked “old” to me.
Just to show you how the chart success, or lack thereof, can be deceitful, look at this song. This song barely made the top 40, and yet it is regarded as one of Tubb’s signature songs (along with “Walking the Floor Over You,” which was the subject of the Vern Gosdin song “Set ‘Em Up Joe” earlier in the list).
Even though this song didn’t do all that well on the charts, 1965 was a pretty good year for Tubb: he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame that year.
Enjoy this beautiful love song, written by Tubb’s nephew Billy Talmadge, that’s a classic in the career of the Texas Troubadour and all of country music.
Waltz Across Texas
Written by Billy Talmadge
Recorded by Ernest Tubb
Released as a single, 1965
Peak chart position: #34
Today’s rock song: “Time for Me to Fly”

What made you run so quickly his hat or the mention of Loretta Lynn?
Got the PM, thank you.

As long as it doesn’t make you want to run over me with your new RV.
