The “Hot 100” in Billboard magazine is a hodgepodge of music styles. If you need any proof of that at all, just look at yesterday’s song, by The Clash, then look at this one. Duke Ellington famously said, “There are only two types of music: good and bad.” Since I find yesterday’s song and today’s song “good” (exceptional, actually), they’re both on this list.
Twilight Time - Platters
Deepening shadows gather splendor as day is done
Fingers of night will soon surrender the setting sun
Dang, what a line. Buck Ram, who wrote most of the Platters’ hits, wrote those marvelous lyrics. He set his words to an instrumental called “Twilight Time” by the Three Suns, recorded in the 40s. As a result, this is one of the few songs Ram wrote with a co-writer credit.
And the Platters….vocal group perfection. Great vocalists can sing a grocery list and make it sound wonderful. Give them a great song, and it’s exquisite.
Twilight Time
Written by Buck Ram, Morty Nevins, Al Nevins, and Artie Dunn
Recorded by the Platters
Released as a single, 1958
Peak chart position: #1
Today’s country song: “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning”
In the afterglow of day:

I have to stick great songs in here to make up for a hundred country songs that you run past.

Oh wow! The Platters sang some great songs, didn’t they. Tony Williams had just the greatest voice. The clarity and pureness like no other. This is one of their best, but my favourite is Only You. Bravo!

@FourWalls I don’t recall that one.
We have a radio programme called “Desert Island Discs”, where the guests, or ‘castaways’, can choose 8 items to take with them, including music. It should be called “Deserted Island Discs” as you say, but it’s not. I don’t know how anyone could pick just a handful of songs from the many great ones.

@Orson_Kart — the one Freddie Mercury covered.
I couldn’t do eight. Picking 100 songs that made our charts was difficult enough.

Another one of my favorites is “(You’ve Got) the Magic Touch.” What vocals!!!! If I had to take just one of their songs to a deserted island with me, though, it would be “The Great Pretender.”
