A man with a unique birthday - or maybe not

I’m sure that, to most of you, the name Normie Rowe, means nothing. In the mid-60s, Rowe was an Australian pop star and teen idol. In late 1967, he was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. This effectively ended his pop career as there was a lot of stigma surrounding returning soldiers and they were treated shamefully. Rowe went on to a career in musical theatre and television. What is interesting in this case is that Rowe appears to have had a unique birthday. Of course, he couldn’t really have a unique birth date but please read on. The draft system operated by birth dates being pulled from a hat. All those whose birthdays fell on that date were drafted into the armed services. It was not till many years later that Rowe learnt he was the only one with his birth date, February 1, to be drafted. It was a political decision to try to halt the declining popularity of the then prime minister, Harold Holt, who was also struggling with the anti-war movement. Rowe later played Harold Holt in several TV productions. Image courtesy of: Steve Mc from Byron Bay, Australia, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

I didn't know Aussies were drafted for that war.

According to the records, between 1962 and 1972, Australia committed almost 60,000 personnel to Vietnam, including ground troops, naval forces and air assets, and contributed significant amounts of material so our contribution was quite significant.

Yes, at least he came home. They had a terrible time when they got back but thankfully they are now seen in a much better light. They had no choice about going.

@judyev That is statistically odd. My cousin was called up that way.

@JudyEv Oh no, I just mean he was called by birthday like everyone else. Not just the only one with that birthday.

So was he someone of importance? Was he drafted for a reason? It's very odd that he could be the only one called up with a birthday on a particular day.

Sounds a bit unfair, being the only selected from that group. The name Holt struck a cord and I vaguely remembered he disappeared while swimming, so I guess this effort to improve his popularity didn't pay off

Yes, he went swimming and was never seen again. There were conspiracy theories that a submarine picked him up offshore but that seems a bit unlikely.

@JudyEv Saw a short video on YouTube about the conspiracy. It was also covered in the Barry Mackenzie cartoon strip in Private Eye magazine

That brings new meaning to "I got your number." At least he survived that terrible war and was able to resume a career in the entertainment field.

In my opinion, it was unfair to draft him for their own purposes. What if he'd been killed?

@dgobucks226 Some of my classmates were drafted. I don't think any have returned totally unscathed.

@JudyEv We also had a Vietnam draft lottery by birthdate. I guess the powers that be (government) thought it the fairest way to do it. Of course, there is no fairness win it comes to war. If I did not have a college deferment I would have been drafted too.

I’m glad he survived. Anytime I see someone wearing a Vietnam veteran ball cap I shake their hand and welcome them home, because they DIDN’T get a welcome home here, either. The sadly funny thing about that war is that the people blamed the soldiers as if they had started the war, but kept re-electing the politicians who were perpetuating it.

So true. None of those drafted had any choice in the matter but they were treated as though they were responsible.

He never got back to being big as a singer. In those days, the soldiers who went to Vietnam were seen almost as though they had started the war so they were reviled when they came home.

Normie Rowe’s unique draft date highlights a political move, leading to his military service, career shift, and acting.
