You waited 89 songs to see this guy show up, but you only had to wait six to see him back again! You can’t have a country music countdown without the Possum, and here he is again! Here’s the next song on my list of favorite charted country songs. The Window Up Above - George Jones This is one of George Jones’ most popular songs. Even Leon Russell covered it. Of course, after “He Stopped Loving Her Today” everyone seemed to forget that Jones had a recording career except for that song. That wasn’t even the best song about the subject matter that Jones did. (That would go to “When the Grass Grows Over Me,” in my opinion.) This is a cautionary tale about cheating: if you’re going to step out, go out. Don’t hang around the front door where your spouse can “listen on and on” about your infidelity. This was also a #1 hit for Mickey Gilley in the 70s, but nothing beats the original Jones recording, with that soft Floyd Cramer piano break and Jones’ trademark vocals. Isn’t that “meow” instead of “meh”? (Although one of the neighborhood strays gives me a half-meow that could be considered a “meh”.)

George Jones was so good at conveying emotion. He was, and still is, one of our best-known country singers.
