The photo has nothing to do with the discussion.
MyLotter Ptrikha_2 (@ptrikha_2) wrote about how he has been under the weather with cold-like symptoms. He passed some time by reading and was surprised to find that he felt a bit better. He wondered if reading had helped. It reminded me of my own experience just a night or two ago.
My ear was really painful and I couldn’t sleep. I got up and took two Panadol then sat and worked on my jigsaw for about an hour. I don’t know that I felt any better but the distraction did take my mind off the pain. It was better than l lying in bed and thinking about how sore my ear was.
Maybe sometimes a distraction works as well as a pain-killer.

Does leg pulling exercise (Horse as the recipient) qualify as a pain relieving distraction for you?

Yet I believe that your frequency and intensity of Leg Pulling has decreased over the time.
May be due to a lack of time.
And well, I still sometimes stumble upon his witty and instinctive responses!

Yes, it can work very well as a pain killer if you get absorbed enough, but sometimes if the pain is too bad you don't feel like doing anything else.

I hope your ear feels better. Previously I never gave much importance to deep breathing, but I've found on several occasions lately that it really can help. Maybe it's just a distraction, but it mostly seems to help.

Meditation and Deep Breathing are said to be more than just distractions.
If practiced well, they can help us physically and mentally.

I too try to add new things...there are of course regular chores.. for us ladies...and then Dad's health is part of it too. Feeding stray dogs is something I added since almost an year...or so. They are so loving and trusting. Ironically, most of them are not Indian pariahs...but cross. So my favorite is a cross with Golden retriever, Roxy, and then there is one cross with Shiba Inu, easily identifiable as a cross because of tail curl and low height, there is a labrador cross girl ..Mary Poppins, LOL And an Afghan hound cross girl, whom I am not yet able to decipher, because she greets me, and demands food, but her tail does not wag as much as all others. Maybe she is older, or has had bad experiences at the hands of humans. I hate flats ...they don't allow dogs...else all of them would be in. LOL

@BarBaraPrz A lump came out today but it wasn't as big as a bumblebee. It's still a bit sore but I'm sure it will settle down overnight.

Oh That is a big honor to mention me!
I hope you are doing fine now !!
Is Panadol a pain reliever? We do get an OTC Ear Pain oral medicine but I have seen pain relievers like Combiflam or Paracetamol work better.
Distractions do help although I could not sleep much on Friday night as my fever rose during sleep time. I had to wake up around 4 in the morning and take a fever medicine (Combiflam) and a cough syrup.
Yesterday night was a tad bit better.
By the way, that Kangaroo reminds me of a Batsman ducking a Fast ball that bounces a lot on a fast pitch.
Plus the capitulation of the Indian Test Team after the Perth win to go down 1-3 in the recent Australian series (if you have followed the news! ) !!

Pat Cummins and team played well and maintained better calm in many situations.
Unfortunately, the defeat does not hurts that much as the way India got beaten.
In 4th test at Melbourne, it was the last day poor batting that led to the downfall.
Improper selection policy hurt in the last match at Sydney.
Then the star culture prevalent in India meant that a few good players sat out while the underperforming "stars" kept on playing.
And if you go on YT, you would find a hell lot of videos doing a detailed post mortem on the Indian loss in this series.
And a lot of stuff on other social media as well.
But well, such things do happen in Sports.

That cute picture certainly would work as a “distraction,” unless it sat down and kicked someone, causing more pain.

Distraction definitely works as a pain killer. Look at crying babies for an example , they could cry at their loudest but a slight distraction most times works and they stop crying and sometimes get immersed with the distraction. Again , the distraction for one may not work for other. Reading works for most and for few it is listening to soft music. It is all down perhaps to individual preferences. I have also seen people working n things just to be distracted from their life troubles or pains. I definitely agree that the distractions are much better than lying on the bed still while we are in pain. Have a great weekend ahead!

@JudyEv - I agree that a distraction can help us a lot with pain and discomfort. I remember when my husband was very ill near the end of his life, he immediately perked up and felt better when he got visitors ... especially our grandchildren! In fact, when one of our daughters brought her dog over, the dog sat patiently on my husband's hospital bed with him for hours, and it really soothed my husband. It was sweet.

@JudyEv - Pets really seem to understand what is going on when people are sick. Even when I went in for my cancer surgery 18 months ago, they brought in a golden retriever dog that we could all hug and pet before we were prepped for our surgeries.

Distraction always helps me, though it might be for short duration if the pain is really bad. Many a times when I am troubled mentally and emotionally, I try to distract myself by reading, talking to a friend or watching some movies. When in mental or physical pain, the pain is increased if you are too focused on it. Distraction does help to ease it off.
