NO, this song is NOT included for one person in particular (looking toward the Jersey Shore
). You all know I love this guy’s music, so why not include a song off an album from him that’s now…wow…40 years old. Here’s today’s song from 1985.
Jolly Mon Sing - Jimmy Buffett
Hey, NJ, give me a “nope” on this one!
I don’t know why, but for some reason this song always reminds me of Steve Goodman. Not his songwriting, nor his singing, but it’s more of his story of making music and meeting a tragic end (dying from complications of leukemia at 36). Buffett went to visit Goodman, who was in a coma, the day before Steve died. In the Goodman biography, Buffett said he played a song for Steve “and every machine alarm in the room went off.”
If you didn’t know, Goodman and Buffett had a long relationship, with Buffett appearing on the cover of Goodman’s second album and Goodman writing or co-writing a number of songs and appearing on Buffett albums. One of the Goodman songs that Buffett covered was “Banana Republic,” which may be why I think of the island setting of that song and this one.
Or I’m most likely, as I tend to do, reading way, way too much into a simple, great song.
PS: this song was co-written by Songwriter Hall of Fame member Will Jennings, who passed away last year.
