I got it right this time!

Third time lucky it seems. My partner tried to do it but couldn’t get it right, and then I had a go, and made it worse! But this time I seem to have succeeded! Although it did take about an hour to unwind and then re-thread the whole thing. Just in time to hang a load of washing out in the sunshine (and for it to actually fully dry as well!) and convince myself that spring has really come – it hasn’t, as the weather forecast predicts freezing temperatures again later this week. Still, I enjoyed it while it lasted, and there’s something very satisfying about seeing a load of clean washing blowing in the breeze on a sunny day. You just don’t get the same satisfaction from damp clothes draped around your house, or from the rumbling of a tumble drier! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

A job well done and you shouldn't have to do it again for many a year!

No indeed, it should last the next 20 years! And just in case, we did buy 120 m of line - that should be enough to re-do it another two times!

@Fleura By then you'll have lost it and have to buy new line!

@Ronrybs That's always a possibility. I have just given it to a friend to use so I may not get it back... we'll see!

Haha - I knew you could do it! I rarely need to resort to clothes on a airer or my dryer. We get a surfeit of sunshine sometimes and you need to get the clothes in as soon as they're dry or they can become 'cooked' like cardboard.

Great for bleaching things but you have to watch the colours don't fade too fast!

My mother had one of those... I think my next sister has it now. I did laundry on the weekend but used my dryer. Maybe the next time I do a load, and it's not raining or snowing, I might hang my laundry outside to dry.

I haven't dried clothes outside in years it does give them a nice smell but I use dryer sheets from Mrs Meyers that are honeysuckle and they make my clothes smell lovely.

I just washed our bedding today and it actually dried outside even though it was quite chilly. Now I'm looking forward to getting into bed!

@fleura I knew you would get there. There’s nothing nicer than putting on a fresh white shirt that has been dried on a washing line that enjoys propinquity to a lavender bush. Bed sheets too, all starchy, cold and smelling of the garden.

Oh yes, my partner thinks I have a bit of an obsession with clean sheets!
