Today I get to show you just how weird my music tastes are. (That is, if you didn’t already know that. ) There’s a rocker for 1985. And for 1955? Why, it’s easy listening!!! Here we go, back 70 years. The Sand and the Sea - Nat “King” Cole Let’s face it, Nat “King” Cole goes well with just about anything. And yes, this would be downright smarmy with anyone else doing it, but that gorgeous voice of Cole’s makes it memorable. Let me tell you something that’s so preposterous that you’ll think it’s a joke: with the King Cole Trio, Cole had a #1 COUNTRY song (“Straighten Up and Fly Right”). How? Well, when the “country” chart started in 1944, it was called the hillbilly, western, folk, and race charts (“race” being the politically incorrect term for music by black artists). So along with Tex Ritter and Ernest Tubb, you had Nat “King” Cole having a #1 hit. (Oh, and Louis Jordan, too: in fact, Jordan had TWO #1 hits on the “country” chart in 1944.) Doesn’t matter: Nat “King” Cole’s great voice is for anyone, anywhere, any generation.
