The last, and now the first

A little while ago I discovered that one of our neighbours, a few houses down the road (a quite reclusive older lady who I have only ever seen once) is named Omega. I thought this was unique, I had never come across anyone named after a letter (Greek or otherwise) before. But then yesterday at an event I was introduced to a young man whose name was Alpha! (I refrained from making any quips about the alpha male, I’m sure they’ve all been done before). So now I have met the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last. It was also somewhat gratifying to me that one is older, female and ‘white’, while the other is young, male and ‘black’ (in this case actually black, not just ‘black’ in the sense of being slightly more coffee-coloured then your average Caucasian). A pleasing juxtaposition. Do you know anyone named after a letter of the alphabet? All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2025. Image from Pixabay.

I saw a list of names of children in some team or other. The names that stuck out in particular were Ocean and Dusty. I also know an Orion and Eclipse but no, nobody named after a letter.

It's funny how you get used to names isn't it? I mean I would think it downright weird if my friend named their child Dusty, and yet everyone knows of Dusty Springfield and never remarks on her odd name!

@JudyEv No, I don't think I do, do tell... So many British surnames are either occupations or place names. Whenever I look at a map I see places that are the same as people I know of. Just yesterday we were in Titchmarsh!

@Fleura And with celebrities in particular they're often given their full name rather than just a first name. It makes sense of course but sometimes it catches you out. when we had concerts on our place and had the musicians stay overnight, someone would say Eric this, Eric that and I'd be wondering who this 'Eric' was. I only ever knew him as Eric Bogle!

No, I've never met anyone named after a letter in any alphabet... I've heard of odd parents that named their kid something strange like that, though. I think all the jokes would get old really fast but people would keep making them.

Yes, Elon Musk for example who has named his child something unpronouncable. At least one can actually say the name of a letter!

Nor me. Maybe it's an emerging trend - but then Omega is definitely not young!

What are the odds of finding one person with a name from the Greek alphabet, let alone two!
