My chicken prefer being fed from the ground

As I considered birds as a source of some easy investment, I started with chicks, several of them. In fear of disease outbreak, I decided to have good feeders an drinkers spread all over my homestead. At first, the free-range birds were used to feeding from the feeders and drinking from the drinkers. With time however, I discovered they preferred food on the ground. The also drink stagnant water in puddles over the clean water in the drinkers. This is a challenge to me, but since they are not usually confined, I have very little control over what they do. They seem to prefer more being fed from the ground.

Because eating from the ground aligns with their natural instincts.

Thank you very much. I am glad they mostly search for cleaner and safer places when they want to lay me some eggs...

Always best to do some research before embarking on a new venture. Chickens are ground feeders.

It's more natural for birds to feed from the ground and to scratch around for their food.

If they are chicks grown locally they will prefer the natural environment.
