Yesterday, it was 87°F. Today? A brisk 48°. But that didn’t stop me from bundling up and heading downtown with Nicholas to celebrate International Guide Dog Day. He trotted along proudly, unaware of the chilly wind, but fully aware that we were heading in the general direction of the nature trail.
That boy always tries to veer down the side road that leads there—hopeful as ever every time we walk. But the business end of this village is past that, and I reminded him that I was on a mission: the thrift shop first, then the pet supply store. Our creekside walk would happen later, on the way home.
He was patient through my browsing, but when it was finally his turn, his tail told the story. I picked the treats—pumpkin, duck, and bison—while he quietly guarded me from the store clerk, all business and no nonsense. Not bad for a Wednesday.
On the way home, he turned down another side road that intersects with the first one, but to my surprise, he chose to bypass the nature trail entirely and head straight home. Must’ve been the haircut he got yesterday—too short for a Bouvier des Flandres to stay warm in the breeze.
To every handler, every guide dog, and every person who plays a role in raising and training these incredible companions—thank you. The world opens wider with a guide dog by your side.
How has your weather been?

It was the coldest winter in 37 years, so we didn't get out much. He's enjoying these more frequent walks.

We've had dogs for most of our married lives but hubby uses a cane. I do insist on having a polite dog, though. I have major trouble with stairs. Rufus dog knows to wait either up or down for me to get done with the stairs before he moves out. I'm glad you have your pooch. I like walking with Rufus into stores though he isn't certified. He knows to hang out on my left side.

@Chellezhere Shelties are good, intelligent dogs. A Sheltie saved my life when I was a teenager.

You are truly blessed to have a good guide dog. Our weather has been flip-flopping between the 50s and 70s.
