A good day for tyre companies

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion but is a nod to readers who like to see the kangaroos. Traffic on the M1 motorway heading south towards Sydney this morning had a nasty surprise. The back door of a trailer carrying 40 tonnes of scrap metal came open spilling sharp metal shards across the road. Hundreds of vehicles had their tyres shredded, with some having multiple tyres punctured. Almost 30 kilometres of the motorway is closed. Imagine the logistics of moving the stranded cars, not to mention the drivers and passengers. Then there is the cleaning up of the road. The company is accepting full responsibility and will pay for damage through their insurance. While that’s a good thing, it’s still a huge inconvenience for those affected

I'm just hoping there are no copycat events. Terrorists, for example, would have a ball with this..

@JudyEv in the 70s here those who wished to disrupt life without planting bombs organised crowds of people to form lines and legitimately use zebra crossings constantly from morning till night. City was paralysed. Government offices were also inundated with vexatious enquiries like “Do I need a licence to take a goat for a walk on a public road?”

Oh, that stinks. I’m happy that the company accepted responsibility so quickly, but as you said, that will take time to repair. I’m thankful no one was seriously injured, because that could easily have been a disaster.

There were stranded cars all along both sides of the motorway. Chaotic indeed.

Wow! That's going to cost them a pretty penny for all the replacement tires not to mention damages to the vehicles caused by the tires throwing the metal shards around. I wonder if the truck driver was the one who latched the doors on the trailer or if the loading crew didn't get them latched correctly?

@JudyEv Yeah, I understand... Do you need new tires on your RV?

They're saying it was a mechanical error. I'm wondering how many who weren't affected will be trying to get a set of new tyres. You know what people are like.

That would be a mess. Glad they are accepting responsibility instead of trying to get out of it

I am in agreement with you that seeing traffic jams on a highway due to scrap metal shredded tires of motorists is not a pretty sight.

Each damaged car would have to be picked up and moved one by one so it would take a long time.

Sounds expensive! I suppose a road sweeping lorry could clean it up, unlike a liquid spill

I think they were bringing something with giant magnets. I haven't heard any more about it. You'd think a road sweeper would get most of it.

@JudyEv I'd have thought a road sweeper could do it, but it wouldn't hurt to use magnets as well
