While England has been suffering in up to 29 degree heat (Celsius) I have been quite content to enjoy a mere 13 degrees here in Ireland - 55F in old money. The garden is sheltered and warm, a bit of a sun trap, and the grass is carpeted in fallen cherry blossom. All my plants are thriving and the washing dries quickly in the fresh breeze. No more purchases need to be made for my trip and I have bought my Euros. I prefer taking cash rather than using a card, especially since not everywhere takes plastic outside the main cities, especially small, local cafés and taxis. But I do wish the Euro had not been devised. I know it makes travel easier in one sense, but I loved the drachma, franc, lira and so on. So much more romantic and with a sense of adventure. Travel has become so easy compared to, for example, the 70s. Back then plastic was only for the well to do, and with no cell phones a call home involved a visit to a post office and a complicated process of connections via telephone exchanges. Airplane tickets were huge documents and British cabin staff spoke with a BBC accent that everyone could understand. Ah well, I’m still going to Greece next week anyway.

It's nice to have cash for tipping, too. Greece would be something to see. I doubt I will ever get there. I hope you enjoy your travels.

My niece, husband and children hired a car for their trip to Yorkshire and it broke down on the way. Not a good start to their holiday but it's fine again now.
