Something new to test!

I have written before about our car-related tribulations. We took our car for an MOT test 6 weeks ago yesterday and haven’t got it back yet! First we had to just do without… then we hired a car for a week’s holiday… then after 4 weeks the garage actually gave us their work van! Last week they needed it back (or at least needed the set of four wheels that was in the back of it!) and planned to bring our car back… but that still didn’t happen so the owner has given us his car to use instead – or maybe it’s his wife’s car (when we get in it says ‘Hello Vicky!’ ) He’s very trusting to just leave us a random vehicle (all newer and posher than ours) and believe that we can drive it with no instruction. This one is an electric car, so totally new to both of us. Yesterday I had promised to take Little One shoe-shopping after school and when I got in (first time I have used it) it was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to actually make it work! On the plus side, all this means we have a chance to test out whether we would like an electric car, if/ when we do actually buy another car. I quickly got used to it but it was odd at first as it isn’t obvious whether the ‘engine is running’ or not as there’s no sound. There’s also no gear stick, and no hand brake. And it starts off really fast from a standstill so you have to be careful not to just run straight into your neighbour’s house!! It also has conditions written on the sun visor which say that if you don’t agree to their use of your private data, don’t drive the car. Well I don’t agree (which would be a big stumbling block if we did consider buying one) but luckily it thinks I’m Vicky! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

Our friend has a hybrid and, as you say, it's really quiet and really fast to take off. There is an electric car here at our house-sit but we said we wouldn't be driving it. It's not a Tesla but some other brand. You may not want to go back to your own vehicle after all this 'flashness'.

I know! And we'll also be afraid the problem will recur so we might end up getting another car anyway!

Hello Vicky! I hope you're enjoying myLot! I'd love to try driving a hybrid but know we can't afford one so we just had our car fixed... *shrug* I hope you're enjoying driving it.

Well it's interesting. A bit creepy in a way. But at least it has normal door handles, not like the hire car we had for our holiday. That one wouldn't let you close the boot yourself, you had to back off and press the remote

@Fleura My brother's car has a trunk like that. It closes itself. But his car isn't electric, it's a gas engine. His car is too small for a regular sized person to get in and out comfortably... I have to crawl into it (so does my brother), turn around and then pull the door closed. I MUCH prefer my big car. I sit in the seat and pull the door closed as I sit down.

That garage saga is too crazy for words, but in the plus side getting to try out an electric car would be fun.

Well, Vicky, if I was in the market for a car, I'd go electric. As I don't go very far my bike is fine

I've never driven an EV. I'm sure it was very interesting and challenging.

As for actually driving, it's quite nice although a bit different to a 'normal' combustion engine. If you brake and then take your foot off the brake, it will start moving again on its own, so you have to be extra careful at places like pedestrian crossings, for example. It also doesn't slow down anywhere near as quickly when you take your foot off the accelerator. In a 'normal' car you might take your foot off the accelerator to slow down for a junction and then only brake when you got near, but with this it doesn't really happen and so you have to remember to brake earlier. Of course if you've only ever driven an EV there would be no problem. All the other electronic gizmos though - those give me the creeps!

@LindaOHio I understand that. Busy roads are scary places.

@Fleura Doesn't sound like something I'd like to drive. I used to drive in-state, out-of-state, with no problem. Now I'm afraid to drive.
