A technical scare

I clicked onto FB yesterday and saw that I had two messages. It wasn't the usual little N to read them, but I clicked on it anyway. Big mistake. I immediately got a screen saying that Windows Defender had locked me out. I tried everything to get out. I suspected it was malware and knew not to click on anything or call the supposed phone number for Microsoft. I finally tried the escape key and got out. Although I knew it wasn't legit, they sure can fool some people, it looked so official. Has that happened to you recently? Scammers are everywhere. Fairly often we have to get a new debit card because of fraudulent charges. My daughter is waiting for a new card right now. And thieves have learned that if they keep the charge low, it can slip by without being detected.

I am so tired of these low lives. I once got a charge on my credit card that I didn’t make, for $96. The credit card company gave me my money back, but what was the charge for? Identity theft protection.

That's like the wolf guarding the hen house! They were stealing from you to protect you from other thieves.

I had this once and had to turn off the computer in the end. I've been more careful since but it's easy to get sucked in by some of them.

I watch for small charges on my credit card although the bank usually catches them too. I had one from France.

Wow, that sounds really frustrating! I haven’t encountered that exact scam recently, but I’ve had similar experiences in the past. One time, I actually had to reformat my whole desktop because the malware got so deep into the system. Once they get in, they tend to lurk around waiting for another chance to hijack things, so I totally get why you were alarmed. Glad you were able to get out of it quickly with just the Escape key—those fake "Windows Defender" pop-ups can look so convincing.

Oh man, I have had stuff like that. Usually a reboot takes care of it. I am waiting for a debit card now due to a toll scam.

I stopped checking my FB account just because of the too many scams. They do not care to check if those who join are legit people or scammers.
