An aspiring candidate for the upcoming presidential elections here in Kenya has in his strategies, suggestion for all citizens to be mandated in national public service to be rewarded by provision of free basic needs such as education and healthcare. According to sources privy to the politician, roadside slashing, waste management, afforestation and voluntary work in public areas such as farms, tea estates and parks will be recorded and the involved parties rewarded by provision of free basic needs. I doubt if this is practicable since many people already have too tight schedules and cannot have any time left for national public service. Is there such a thing as public service in your country or region? How do those involved benefit from it?

Sounds good to me, maybe an hour a week would be sufficient.

We don't have it here but I think Singapore might have compulsory national service.

We used to but I am unsure as to whether it is still in effect. Can't remember what it was called.
