The effects of certain foods, rather surprising.

My son likes some processed foods way too much. I have always gone by the rule that if it's really processed, not to eat it very often. Overly processed meats and other foods can literally be deadly if eaten too often. My son in law and I were discussing this recently. He is a doctor. He teaches medical school classes so he is always up to snuff on this stuff. Not sure why I am posting this, because it's not going to change anyone's mind. I grew up in an era that eating processed meats was a very common, often everyday thing for many people. I do have to say that since I have eliminated so many overly processed foods, it has made it much easier to maintain my weight and sugar levels, etc. A trade-off of sorts...and I honestly don't miss those things now. Do you eat a lot of processed foods? A single hot dog shaves 36 minutes off your life. For every piece of bacon we eat, we lose 6 minutes. One single serving of prosciutto, salami, and pepperoni and most cured meats takes 24 minutes off your life. (This one worries me as my grandsons eat pepperoni out of the package all the time!) A fast food double cheeseburger costs us 9 minutes. Every single soda, whether it's diet or regular, takes 12 minutes off our life. We as a country eat a lot of processed foods. Some meats we consider healthy, aren't so healthy after all. Bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats rate out the worst, with high sodium and chemical contents. They are usually high in saturated fat, and yet even more sodium. Many have nitrates, which can cause cancer. The recommendations on a lot of these items is to have them no more than once a week, and to consider them a treat rather than an everyday thing. Maybe that's a good idea. Over the past few years, I have researched a lot of processed foods--what's in them, and what effects they can have on a person. Fascinating, but a bit scary. I will still have my BLT's with my homegrown tomatoes...I will still have ham once in a while. Never was fond of pepperoni or salami, and I can live without most things like that. The big shocker for me was a basic peanut butter and jelly sandwich will ADD 34 minutes to your life! As many as I have eaten in my lifetime, I may live forever!!

A doctor started explaining how much longer I could live if I ate salads every day and gave up eating meats... I was serious when I told him that if I had to give up eating foods I love just to live a little longer, then dig my grave. I wasn't giving anything up. He shook his head and kept his opinions to himself after that. Doctors DON'T know everything and they can give you misinformation just like Joe Blow on the street who has no medical degree. Look at what's happened with butter and margarine. Doctors used to swear eating butter was the worst thing we could eat and told us to eat margarine instead. NOW, they're saying the exact opposite!

@MarieCoyle I ate salads when I was working out all the time but I'm not a rabbit and don't like them.

I eat a green salad pretty much every day. Not because it’s good for me as much as I really enjoy salad a lot. Oddly, my family never cared for margarine and we used butter. I still don’t like margarine. I do use butter sparingly but I love the taste of it.

processed foods are so common now that we often forget to question what’s actually in them.

@snowy22315 They are often ridiculously large, and enough for two people!

I think that is most of the problem, people don't know how to practice in moderation anymore!

I confess that I eat what I like and not what is healthy. But my best doctor is my body. It says when to stop. Decades ago, doctors said tha we should not eat butter and to use margarine instead. And poor eggs were banned too.I did not give up on lots of butter and salt to corn on the cob. And I have always been an egg lover. Later in was found that some people "made" bad cholesterol. My sister in law eats an extra leaf of lettuce and her cholesterol goes up. I love salami but stopped eating it completly right before this episode of diverticulitis. My body said no to many things before the results of the scan. I envy your homegrown tomatoes. I have not been able to have a veggie path since Luna came to my life. And I call supermarket tomates "plastic tomatoes".

My family never cared for margarine and we used butter. Eggs, we did not give up, either. I think those two things were just part of what we ate on a fairly regular basis. And we were used to the good taste of butter, and absolutely hated the taste of margarine, so we never switched to it. My grandma refused to use margarine, she said it was nasty. She was right. I love most meats, but salami and pepperoni are not meats I enjoy so I don't eat them. Tomatoes...I love them. Homegrown are the best, I agree. Those hothouse tomatoes can be truly tasteless!

Many chocolates are considered processed, milk chocolate is the biggest offender of this due to the sugar content, additives, etc. Dark chocolate with a high cocoa bean content and not so much sugar is the healthiest. Candy bars are definitely a culprit.

I make sure that the lunch meat I eat is not processed. I've had enough PB&Js to extend my life to 100.

My only vice is soda, and I have cut down, but I’ll never completely be off of it. And honestly, with my genetics, I don’t mind shaving some time off of my life. Hot dogs….what a product!

Back in my heyday, I thought if I had pizza or tacos I had to have a soda with them. But that was years ago. I only drink sodas like ginger ale or Sprite if I am sick and/or getting over a flu, etc. They have never been a favorite of mine. We don't always follow our genetics. Stay positive, sweet lady, the world needs more Amber-like people!

I eat hot dogs and hamburgers on occasion. The one sauce that I really like that is not good for you is Ranch Salad Dressing.

@MarieCoyle the hot dogs I only buy is the brand Nathan's Hot Dogs because they are pure beef franks. It is a better quality.

I really love a good, home-grilled hamburger. Hot dogs have never really been my thing...there is one German deli here that makes pure beef hot dogs that don't have a ton of bad stuff in them, and they are delicious. We seem to be a society of sauces, I know. And many of them are so good!

I've been mostly eating poultry and fish these days. Turkey bacon and hot dogs, and other healthier options. This is interesting to know.

We do eat a lot of chicken, turkey, and fish here. Red meat is very high in price, we have it occasionally but eat way, way less of it than we ever have.

Thankfully, we don't eat processed foods often. We are not really into bacons, hotdogs and the likes. We can go a month or two without those. But real talk, for most people its hard to limit, its tough because of convenience.
