Well, I warned you that there’d be more country music along the way. Here we are! I mentioned earlier that there were six “country” songs that made it to #1 on the pop charts in 1975. This guy had two of them. This is the obviously country one.
Thank God I’m a Country Boy - John Denver
The other #1 song that John Denver had in 1975 was “I’m Sorry” (no, not the Brenda Lee song). Man, that song stunk. But I loved the B-side, “Calypso,” which was a tribute to Jacques Cousteau (kids, look him up, we old folks know him very well). This was easily the better of Denver’s chart-toppers in 1975.
Denver originally recorded this on Back Home Again in 1974, but the live version was released as a single…and wow, did it take off. And it’s easy to understand why: it’s fun and upbeat and happy. In fact, I think everyone liked this song, except my mom (she’d turn the radio off when she heard that “whoo!” at the beginning, before Denver had a chance to start singing
).
Hard to believe that was 50 years ago. The positive feel of the song is timeless. And hey, put a bass behind this, and it’s a rap song!

I don't mind John Denver; but this isn't one of my faves.

I didn’t know whether to flag it or not…because I know you’d know it.

I miss John Denver so much. I loved his clear, wonderful voice and his great tunes. Such a silly accident to end ones life.

@celticeagle — he was supposedly practicing landings in an experiment model. And yes, you can go online and buy your own build-a-plane kit.

I know, especially since he technically shouldn’t have even been flying.

I did not realize John did not write this song.

Surprise, huh? It is unusual, given how many of his hits he did write.

That’s cool! He’s forever linked to West Virginia because of the song.

That’s the fun of these countdowns. In contrast, this is one of the few hits of his that I do like. And I like it a lot!
