I've Been Waiting.......It's Begun

My daughter has been smoking for 42 years. She has tried many times to quit. She has to want to, and part of her does want to, while the other part is just addicted. She has tried cold turkey, nicotine patches, and lozenges. She gets stressed, and it's too easy to go back to smoking. I have tried to help her with the stress, but it hasn't helped much. I also try to get her to talk to her doctor. This time she did. The doctor has put in an order for the patches again. I hope she will utilize them. The doctor also wants her to get a CT scan of her chest. I helped her set that up for June 3rd.
I've been worrying about this for a long time. Inevitably, she will probably get some form of emphysema, but I thought it would happen after I was gone, and my grandson would have to deal with the horror of it. Or, miraculously, she would be able to quit, and her lungs would have a chance to heal. But, instead, this has begun.
I remember (and have told my daughter) how awful it was to watch my grandfather die of emphysema. He could barely breathe, and it took all his strength to walk from the living room couch to the hallway and on into the bathroom to shave each morning. He had to make several stops and hold on to things as he went. It is horrible to watch someone break down like that.
I've been seeing the signs. How winded she'd get coming upstairs. Now she sleeps downstairs, usually. She has started to cough, too.
Some of us on here have illnesses in our families. We cope and have Mylot for a sounding board, and have made several friends. I am thankful I have this forum. May we all keep keepin' on and taking care of our own as well as we can.

I understand how you feel and how worried you must be about this. Wait until you see the results of the ct scan before jumping to conclusions. You may be right, (and you probably are), but she needs you to be hopeful. Let's pray that this is the wake-up call she needs.

You're right , and although I am hopeful and hope I show that I am also worried. She is my only child, Kayla.

@celticeagle Yes, it gives me a headache to be in a room where someone is smoking.

Yvonne my wife found out about emphysema and COPD when her lungs collapsed in her mid 40,s.
It's been a struggle. A real struggle.
I sincerely hope that your daughter can put into fill perspective exactly what is at stake here.
Stopping smoking now could be the difference between life with or without Oxygen support and all the other impediments and health problems continued smoking can cause.
Yvonne has done well and already exceeded her prognosis by 6 years.
It's actually quite alarming that your daughter is so young yet you have noticed her struggle already.
If she spoke to Yvonne she would stop,
Yvonne has helped many women stop smoking because of her own struggle

Perhaps so. Sorry to hear of your wife. It's a horrible affliction. I wish she'd quit before it's too late.

Yvonne continued smoking for the first few years after her lung collapse but stopped smoking completely 8 years ago.
I think the 8 years smoke free has extended her life and kept the quality of life as good as it can be
She hasn't needed Oxygen so far, which to be honest is the best news as we had both expected that she would do by now
