My Work History

For some reason, I was thinking recently of the hourly wage I ended my working career making. It is a rather embarrassing reveal. I came back from the carnival in the mid-70s and worked a couple of years as a cocktail waitress. After that, I worked at Mountain Bell from about 1974 until the divestiture(breaking of the monopoly AT&T had had until that time) of AT&T in 1980-81. So then it became AT&T. I quit working there in the mid-80s and worked for Burger King, a couple of answering services, Sears, The Arc, Sawtooth Ministries, EDS, and Hewlett-Packard. I took an early retirement in 2005 or 2006. That's 31+ years of work. I remember one of my first raises at AT&T put me at $5 an hour. I ended my work career making $9 and something. So, in more than 30 years of work, I only made $4 and something. Not much, I'd say. And, I wonder if that amount would be any higher if I were a man. Your thoughts.

I don't know A lot of jobs before 2000 were very poorly paid in comparison to wages today. I worked about 40 years and don't really recall how much I earned as an hourly rate anywhere Except one job I did for 6 weeks in the 90,s Cleaning toilets from the oil rigs. Would get the chemical suit on and hose away at.them.with strong chemicals for hours It was a horrible job but it paid £10 per hour

Here pay equity did not come into effect until 1989, so you could have made more.
