Yesterday was my last doctor’s appointment for nearly three weeks. That means I’m free to go places for a few days. Oh, and will you lookie what I found? A waterfall!!! Imagine that. This is part of the splendor in the Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky. Right about where Swift Camp Creek and Rock Bridge Fork meet, there’s a simply marvelous waterfall. It’s known as Creation Falls. The creek isn’t very deep at this point (a child out wading in the water at the base of the falls was in water about to her knees), so it’s perfect for wading as well as marveling. There’s plenty to marvel at, too! There are overhangs on both sides at the bottom, which allow you to get in out of the hot sun (one side has more water than the other). There are a couple of tunnels that the water has carved out over the centuries (top left) that look like they could either be fun exploration or terrifying, based on what might be in there. (And this is prime country for cottonmouths and rattlesnakes…oh, and bears!) I can imagine this would be an extremely difficult hike after a rain storm (it was uneasy footing as it was), and it could be quite dangerous. Today, though, despite the rain we’ve had this year, everything was perfect. As you can see in the photos, the visitors took advantage of the combination of low water and higher temperatures to enjoy a natural swimming hole. Tough walk back up, but worth every step!! You bet it was! It’s in the lower part of the gorge so it’s surrounded by walls that keep the temperature down.

What a pool of cool, clear water in the photo ! However the cottonmouths and rattlesnakes spoil the fun in a way.

I love rivers, lakes and waterfalls and those photos are beautiful. I would never dare to explore those tunnels, I surely would prefer to see a bear than a snake. I am terrified by snakes.

Saw a snake on the road yesterday. It was nowhere near me and I was in my car, so everything was fine.

@FourWalls - When I noticed the snakes in the garden and I was inside it was "almost" fine.

We have had quite a bit of flooding this year in various parts of the state with excessive rainfall, sadly. Glad you enjoyed the photos!
