Decisions, decisions.

I can’t decide if I wish to squander €14 euro (for each of three of us) to view the Bayeux Tapestry. There it’ll sit all curated for us to shuffle past before heading to the exorbitantly priced café and gift shop, and really I have no interest in looking at it. Nor have I any interest in visiting the beaches of Normandy where, 80 years ago tomorrow, allied forces landed to liberate France and eventually all of Europe from Nazi occupation. Yes I’m grateful, but I’m on holiday, I don’t want to ponder the war. These heretical thoughts I will not be sharing with the profiteers of tourism. And I’ll not be taking orders from tawdry travel books. I risk being burned at the stake I know, but the travel ‘industry’ really sucks. Each morning I set out boldly to walk the streets of this fine town, fine a suitable place for lunch and fit interesting parks and other outdoor experiences in around that. It’s lovely to find somewhere quiet to read and reflect well off the tourist trail. It’s more fascinating to watch ordinary people going about their business than to watch what some travel writer has decided I ought to watch. I’m getting all steamed up now. Can you tell?

Yes, I can tell and I don't like to do what somebody else thinks I "should" do, either. When we go on vacation, Pretty and I explore places we've never been, people watch from a quiet bench somewhere and find things that are interesting to us to do. Then we come home refreshed... I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation.

To each his own. It's certainly interesting watching the locals go about their normal business.

@judyev Yes, and I make a wonderful attraction for foreign visitors to Larne as they watch me walking about town!

I would love to be there to walk the streets to just see what is around me.

That's why we never went on a "guided tour". We wanted to see what WE wanted to see. Enjoy your trip and safe travels!

I too hate the idea of travel guides guiding me through the tour...I know its their livelihood but I would like to be left alone to roam around and choose what to see.

It's not something that I would part with 14 Euros each for Yvonne and I to see. I am ex Army and the beaches of Normandy I would sooner give a miss to be honest. Now if they had a cafe tour.....
