Why would someone dress as a police officer and shoot Minnesota Lawmakers?

I am befuddled by what happened in Minnesota. Why would someone dress up as a police officer and shoot Democratic Lawmakers? If this is just another mentally ill person, how did they gain access to police gear and a vehicle that looked like a police vehicle? I do NOT believe Trump authorized this. It is too "extreme." What are your thoughts? We live in odd times.
A Minnesota state representative and her husband were shot and killed, and a state senator and his wife were shot and wounded in an "act of targeted political violence" at their homes early Saturday, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said. A manhunt is now underway

Heartbreaking. And it’s been said it is of course being seen as politically motivated. This is not the world i envisioned when I had children.

@MarieCoyle Even till 15 to 20 years back, there were hopes of a better world. Now, things seem to be slipping out of hand. Did you also see the news of Israel and Iran conflict? World War III seems to be a big possibility now and in some ways, it is perhaps already on !

@TheHorse Well, International Polity of US is of high self interest but in ways that can often cause regional and global instability.

I read about it. This administration has created many extremists sadly. On both sides

Very odd and when I looked online it said people can order and buy police stuff online or even as I copied this from the net Boelter may have obtained gear from local police departments, which sometimes sell or donate surplus equipment.

My hunch is that it will be determined that he had a history of metal illness. Many of the Trump supporters I know have a history of mental illness. But none (to my knowledge) are homocidal.

@TheHorse Aye. It really is a good question Is this another myth we are taught when we are children? We should trust them, and be able to trust them without any doubt

I guess the person who dressed as a police officer may have been inspired from the time that gangsters dressed as police officers rubbed out gangsters from a rival gang on orders of Al Capone in Chicago,
