The umblical cord provides oxygen and nutrients to the fetus through the mother's blood during pregnancy. Did you know after delivery it is collected and stored as Umbilical cord blood, is a rich source of stem cells, that help cure diseases, including some cancers and blood disorders. I know that in Italy women are allowed to "donate" the umbilical cord of their babies, but they cannot ask to keep it.

My children did this when my grandchildren were born. It wasn't as costly as it is now. I looked it up one day, and it's now about $300 per year to store the umbilical cord in the approved medical settings. Ouch.
