The new maid

I wrote about the new maid and how the first day went. I get a call the next day informing me that she is not well. I just put the phone down and decided not to keep her. Who wants someone who may be a good worker but stays away giving excuses. I called up that nun who had recommended her and she also felt that she could have just swallowed a pill and not stayed away The nun promised to look for someone else. The nun called me today and mentioned that the maid wants her job and if I can reconsider. I thought about it for a while and decided may as well have her back but there will be no repeat of such excuses. In a way I am happy to call her back as I found her to be efficient

Give her a second chance, but no more excuses for the future.

@allknowing She must be honest and let you know what is the problem if she cannot come. You need to know.

You may be making a mistake. I think that your initial thoughts were spot on to be honest with you. I would have got someone else This one will let you down

That sounds like a fair and thoughtful approach. While it's true that reliability is important—especially in someone you depend on day-to-day—it’s also realistic to acknowledge that anyone can fall sick unexpectedly. Illness isn’t always something we can just push through, especially if it affects the quality of work or the health of others around us. What matters most is whether it becomes a pattern. If it’s a one-off and she proves dependable moving forward, then giving her another chance feels like a sensible decision. It’s encouraging that you found her efficient—that's not easy to come by. Hopefully this fresh start works out well for both of you.

@allknowing, it appears that you can gradually fix that as the days pass. She is just getting warmed up and getting used to serving you, in my opinion.

She is back but I see she has issues with punctuality.

I’m glad she changed her mind and you will not have to look for a new one.

@allknowing No, I meant she changed her mind and got over her “illness”. Foolishness should not be tolerated by you, of course.

I hope she doesn't repeat calling in sick... although, you can't always help when you get sick.

It must have been something else that made her stay at home. Anyway she will have learnt her lesson now.

What if she was really sick?.lt is hard to believe someone would pretend to be ill the day after starting a new job. Although, anything is possible where people are concerned...

@allknowing I hope it does. It can be hard finding good help. Back in the day when l worked out, l came home one day and found my helper relaxed on the sofa watching television - and the house was a mess. The Queen was visiting our country at the time and her excuse was that she couldn't miss what was going on.
