Telling secrets out of school

The school year in Australia finishes around late November/early December. It’s customary for the senior students to get up to a few pranks during the last few weeks. A bit of backstory first. Most Fridays, when Vince was working, we’d go to the local Chinese restaurant for dinner. They employed local high school students as wait staff and we got on well with them. They weren’t very polished but that didn’t worry us. We just enjoyed talking to them and we got to know some quite well. One girl had almost finished at high school and told us how the boys at a neighbouring college were planning to put Condy’s crystals in the school swimming pool. This would turn it purple. To them, it seemed a harmless enough prank but, in reality, the pool would have to be drained and it was likely the grouting would stain. Vince went home very worried and, next morning, employed security staff for the final two days to ensure the same thing didn’t happen at his school. The photo belongs to me.

Except for the possible damage, it would be a little funny

It would be funny as long as it didn't happen to your school - if you were an adult in charge of such things. Our young friend thought it was very funny.

@JudyEv He shouldn't get away scot-free. At least no one was hurt

Playing pranks is ok to an extent. But the boys, or whoever they may be, should understand that pranks should be light in manner. And shouldn't cause anyone or anything any harm.

@JudyEv True. That's why fear is important. I remember to have learnt in my college days, our psychology professor used to tell us how fear can protect us from potential dangers and unwanted consequences.

I totally agree. Unfortunately, young folk don't often think about the consequences of their actions.

Some of students tend not to consider the consequences before they do something. You seem to love Chinese food.

Young people certainly don't think of the consequences of their actions. I do like Chinese food but it's possibly 'westernised' to some extent. This restaurant was quite cheap and always full of customers. The food was really good.

Some pranks are not at all funny and they end up being dangerous.

@JudyEv - They almost never do, they only think that "it could be funny".

You're quite right. Teenagers rarely consider the outcome of some of their actions.

It's a silly thing to do but teenagers are known for being smart sometimes.

I don't think so. Maybe the word leaked out and they were able to stop it. It certainly didn't happen at Vince's school.

I don't know if it actually happened or if they were prevented from doing it.

That’s the thing about being young: you never know the real cost of a “harmless prank” until after you do it and discover it wasn’t so “harmless” after all.

That's so true. With a bit of age comes the ability to consider the consequences.

Pumping out a school-size swimming pool would be very costly.

He had security men with dogs patrolling the pool for two nights but no-one tried to get it. It was good insurance.

That's vandalism. I honestly don't find much humor in it.

None of the adults would think it funny. The kids would but you're right. It's really just vandalism.

He must have had a very good rapport with the students to have one divulge such a 'secret'.

The girl wasn't from his school but was serving on tables in the restaurant. We got to know her quite well.
