Seeing your neighbors in the past in the newspaper...

And that too for a very sad news. They committed suicide.
Yes, this elderly couple( husband 81 years old and wife 74 years old)lived in our apartment for close to 20 years and moved to an old age home few months back. They were found hanging in their room.
Seeing their picture in the local newspaper with the news of their suicide came as shock. We were not even aware that they shifted to old age home. They stayed with their son in our apartment complex. The news said that their son had dropped them to old age facility in February. He took that decision seeing the ongoing stress between the elderly couple and daughter in law. He had left them in old age home once in 2022 too for few months after such domestic feud. But then the old father got very sick and they brought them back after one month. This was reported in the news. We were not aware of this either.
It seems that the couple had some argument over TV watching in the evening. Wife wanted to watch some family drama serial and husband wanted music. This was told by elderly lady next door. They had loud arguments. Next morning they didn't join others for breakfast. People got concerned and knocked the door. When they did not open the door, the door was broken and they were found hanging there.
That's terrible! Such small argument can't be the reason for such drastic step. It's years of emotional stress, despair and sense of abandonment.
Really makes me wonder ...do we care any more? They looked fine, gentle couple with a warm smile. No one knew the agony they were going through. We didn't notice that they were missing from the neighborhood. We were so engrossed in our lives. What's the age we are living in?
Just be kind and nice to people. Lend someone listening ears...that's what they are seeking. The least we can do. We have so many around fighting their. mental and emotional agony in silence .

That is so true. My simple mantra is to treat others the way you would like to be treated. The least one can do is to be kind, it costs nothing.

@arunima25 Yes, and not to be condescending to others, thinking you're smarter than they are.

No doubt you were shocked to read it in the newspaper probably because you are not in touch with any of theirfamily But such a scenario is here to stay

@arunima25 When we were kids we were so involved with each other. Knew everything that was going on with our neighbours but today each of us have our own world to ourselves.

Yes, not in touch. Nothing more than passing a smile when you cross each other. You are right that such a scenario is here to stay. Everyone is in mad rush and people are shrinking to themselves these days. The vibrant neighbourhood, the family bonds.... everything that was so much a part of our culture has started disappearing so fast.

@allknowing Yes. We don't even know the person living with us under the same roof. Sad and unfortunate times

It's terrible! More and more people are silently fighting the emotional despair and loneliness. Life these days is too self centred and lonely.

I was taken aback when I saw their picture and it stuck as some faces very familiar. It's sad. Yes, people across all age groups are fighting their battles silently with a straight face.
We keep sharing on social media platforms but not to the ones living with us under the same roof.

How horrible. I can't imagine what the couple was going through mentally.

@arunima25 Quite honestly...the world is going to hell in a hand basket. Man has forgotten how to be kind and tolerant.

Hmm...it's saddening to even feel what mental and emotional turmoil they were going through. They were suffering silently.

Yes, many are fighting their battles keeping a straight face. Emotional despair and depression is all time high
. It's very tough to guess those red alerts unless you are too close to them, especially in a world where people are shrinking to themselves. It's terrible!!

I agree with you. Enduring silence when living with Children is worse suffering.

Even I felt guilty of not knowing our neighbors well. We are in a rush, living our lives. It's a world where people are shrinking to themselves.
