It’s 4 O’Clock Somewhere: My Accidental Tribute to Gram

Have you ever heard the idiom, “Sometimes, when I open my mouth, my mother comes out”? Lately, I seem to be invoking my grandmother instead. Gram was never one to watch much TV, especially before the 6:00 PM news. We actually lived in Mom’s house, but Gram was the one running the ship. No TV was allowed at mealtimes. But, by the time she was my age, Gram could be seen every afternoon at 4:00 PM, sitting down with a Scotch to watch her favorite (now syndicated) show. With TV as it is today, there isn’t necessarily anything I specifically sit down to watch (unless it’s Matlock, NCIS, Watson, or something like that). And, I don’t keep it running for hours. But, lately, I have realized I am turning the TV on around 4:00 PM—just like my grandma used to do. What family member’s ritual have you unintentionally inherited?
