The Little Stinker

This morning’s paratransit ride did not go quite as planned. For reasons unknown to those of us who know logistics are not always logical, I was the first pickup. From there, the bus zigzagged about 30 miles, stopping to pick up two more passengers along the way before finally heading into the city—nearly an hour from where I’d started. I knew there would be two other passengers, one of whom I’ve personally known and worked with for over a year.
Nick (guide dog) was with me. He’s usually calm, and well-behaved (and was when it was just me and Sue), but this trip threw him off. The bus was old and rattly, the ride was long, and there were more passengers than usual (meaning it’s usually just me and the driver).
It may have been unfamiliar people getting on in unfamiliar places. Or, the motion, the stress, the scent changes—who knows. Whatever the reason, just before the final passenger got on, Nick pooped. On. The. Bus.
Thankfully, I had poop bags and cleaned it up immediately. The driver gave me a napkin and she disposed of the bag for me at the next stop. No one made a fuss, which I appreciated, but it was still one of those moments you don’t forget.
Have you ever had an animal, a child, or a sundowning adult, react unexpectedly in a stressful situation? Or been in a public space when something awkward like this happened? How did you handle it—or how do you wish it had been?
Let me know—because even with cleanup handled, I’m still cringing a little.

I was totally embarrassed years ago grocery shopping with my three girls. The youngest two are twins, and one only daughter who is 3.5 years older than them. They were about 2.5 and if I remember correctly they were walking along in the store also. My oldest went to the end of the grocery aisle and called out for BJ. People started looking around. Finally an older man asked me if my son was lost in the store. I said, "No sir. I don't have a son." He said then who is your little one calling? I told him if it is BJ that is her imaginary dog!!

Oh, I can only imagine. I have a much older friend whose mother would now be over 100. Her mother had dementia and my friend was often called to come help her, as she'd leave her apartment in just her undies—no pants, dress, or skirt.

I think the ricketiness of the bus, coupled with strangers and a longer ride did him in.

When we had our Westie dog we were in Plymouth one time and he did a wee up the side of the lighthouse ....a famous landmark in the UK. There were people around and they just saw the funny side of it and laughed.

That's always good. I'm sure a similar reaction would be had here if a dog piddled on Plymouth Rock.

One of our dogs pooped in the middle of a training class. That was embarrassing. Poor Nick. He was stressed.

My student would do that, could not help it, but it was not always well contained. I am sorry for your dog, and you because I know it felt like a huge inconvenience. From the sound of it though, it was handled well.

Yes, I mean, he is a dog, and they do have accidents sometimes. Thank goodness paratransit bus floors are not fabric.

I think that's the nature of that breed. I've known many that get a bit too excited.

It could've been. Nick is usually good in these buses. I think he was just overstimulated.

Thank you. The only thing I wish I'd had with me were baby wipes for the floor, but I did manage to get it all up.
