When I first saw Steve Martin he was just a Comedian. He was on Saturday Night Live. Then he got into comedic acting in films like The Jerk. That was in the 1970's.
He was funny, sure, but a little over-the-top for my taste.
Fast forward and he's also a very accomplished musician. He has played Bluegrass music (banjo) with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Edie Brickell.
Then in 2016 he wrote Bright Star, a Broadway Musical, which I saw the local production of and cried. It was very moving.
He's also written several pieces in The New Yorker, some books, some other articles, etc.
He's hosted the Academy Awards.
I'm now watching him act, write, produce, and direct in "Only Murders in the Building" on streaming video. It is most excellent.
So back to my initial assessment of Steve Martin in the 1970's that he was funny but just okay, he has done a lot over his career and is very talented in multiple disciplines.
Are you a Steve Martin fan?

I'm a semi Steve Martin fan. He's never been tops on my list, but I can't deny his cred. He's been great in a lot of things, okay in others, his stand up doesn't really strike me as particularly funny though. I hated him as Inspector Clouseau.
So yeah. I'm a semi Steve Martin fan.

I totally get that. I never saw "The Man With Two Brains" or "Pink Panther"

@LooeyVille I saw both. Pink Panther was a total flop for me. The Man With Two Brains was okay.

Definitely! I think my favourite movie of his is Planes, Trains & Automobiles with John Candy. One of the funniest movies ever in my opinion.

Oh, yes. I saw him do standup live in 1978.
He won his first Emmy as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 60s.
