Do you ever think back and yearn for the good old days or a time when something really made you happy? For me, Holidays like July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas can bring out that nostalgia especially now with both my parents gone.
Great food is one of those things that inspired fond memories for me. And even though my mom always said she hated cooking, she was a great cook, lol. Since July 4th just passed, I'll share what my mom would cook for us on that day.
JULY 4th MENU
-Sausage on the grill with peppers
-Corn on the Cob
-Potato, Macaroni Salad, or Cole Slaw take your pick
-Dessert: Key Lime Pie or Ice Cream
Now that wasn't the only fond memory I had on July 4th. Shooting off firecrackers with my older brother was great fun too. We had quite an assortment including cherry bombs, bottle rockets, roman candles, and of course sparklers.
So, that's my nostalgic memory as I thought about things I miss on this holiday weekend. Do you have any nostalgic memories from your past? It doesn't have to be about July 4th.

Music, of course. Music is a great time machine.

No argument here! I remember listening to AM radio with Cousin Brucie. Man am I old, lol
I remember when seeing a top artist at a concert cost about as much as a box seat at a Mets game. So glad I could afford to see so many great performers back then.

It’s funny you mention this. I had a weird flashback to the past this week when I saw a pair of earrings my 14 year old niece wanted for her birthday. They were pure 1990s, and they reminded me of Spirit Week at school. One day of the week was Neon Day. My late mom would help my sister and I get all decked out, and we’d really get into it. It brought good memories, but I’m also tearing up as I write this. Darn tears!!
*These are the obnoxious earrings I would have loved years ago that my niece loves now.

@AmbiePam Some are bittersweet but I try to focus on the happier ones. But yes, some can bring a tear to your eye.

Those are attention getters!
I remember those glowing necklaces and bracelets sold at Amusement parks and the boardwalk that kids would wear during summer.
Childhood memories do make us feel sad and happy at the same time don't they.
When I think back, I've had many other fond memories to savor: Some examples-
-Playing Little League baseball and coming in 1st place.
-Going on the rides at Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.
-Baking Christmas cookies with my mom.

Yeah. I can remember a few school days that bring both tears and laughter at the same time. Then there is the Diwali festival. A few personal things that I went through - both good and bad... Well, there are quite a few occasions that make me nostalgic

@dgobucks226 Aye... You are welcome!
School days and school memories are one of the best memories of our lives. When we go back to those days we really get lost there. It's a different world all together. It's fun.
The festive time is always the best time of the year. Here, we all celebrate almost all festivals together irrespective of which festival we are celebrating.

School memories can be both positive and negative during those formative years. I enjoyed my college years much more.
Festivals are great fun. I've also gone to some really good ones too.
Thanks for sharing!

Nothing like nature's beauty. I remember this beautiful sunset as I was walking along the boardwalk near my town. Lucky enough to capture it on my cell phone. Here's the photo...
When I think back, I've had many other fond memories to savor: Some examples-
-Riding my cousin's pony while on vacation in NC.
-Baking Christmas cookies with my mom.
-Going to visit the many lighthouses along the coast of North Carolina.

Good one OT! I second that memory too. Catching small sunnies off the dock at my cousin's lake house in NC.
When I think back, I've had many other fond memories to savor: Some examples-
-Going to see the Mets play at Shea Stadium.
-Eating "hushpuppies" at the fish camp restaurant in NC.
-Going on the rides at Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.
-Attending many concerts at PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. (James Taylor's music on a summer evening was perfect)

Yes, those are carefree days you describe for sure. I too remember my beach days fondly, body surfing the waves to shore, fishing off the jetties, going to the boardwalk arcade or playing miniature golf. My parents liked the shore so much they retired there.
When I think back, I've had many other fond memories to savor: Some examples---
-The many times I've played golf with my dad.
-Baking Christmas cookies with my mom.
-Mom's occasional surprise dinners. Shrimp creole, crab claws, stuffed artichokes, chicken franchise, and those desserts like persimmon pudding, cheesecake, and chocolate chip brownie squares.

I agree not everyone loves cooking. But that spread looks delicious. I too miss my old days a lot. Especially recently when I lost my mom and brother in less that 8 months period. I miss going back to my parents home, miss those monsoons when my mom use to cook delicious chicken broth rice and chicken cutlets to go with. It yse to be extremely cold and rainy at our place for 4 to 5 months and that cosy food and my bed just flash back. Life was less stressful and painful. It is now that I go through anxiety everyday because of my loss and my days are gloomy.

Remembering pleasant past memories can definitely help when you're feeling down. And those comfort foods were always enjoyable.
Sorry for your loss. Having a wonderful family is God's gift to you, just as you are to them. Cherish those memories...

I remember fondly the days when ….
I didn’t have bills to pay
I didn’t have to decide what to cook every single day
I didn’t have to do housework …..
Oh bring back my days of youth.
I miss making dens with my friends, playing out til it was dark, visiting my Grandparents,

Ah yes, those carefree days. Why are we in such a rush to grow up and be on our own.
Enjoying summers off from school to play with friends. I remember playing hide and seek, camping outside in a tent, playing baseball at the park, racing homemade go-carts, and waiting for the ice cream man's truck to arrive to buy a toasted almond on a stick.
