Why am I finding this so hard?

My mother kept a lot (most!) of the things from my childhood, including many clothes, and then when I had children they had a new lease of life; Big One wore them, and in many cases Little One wore them as well. By then they had had quite a lot of use so some had to go, others were passed on, but some were kept. Then there was this little coat and hood outfit. I can remember wearing it myself–I must have been about two years old. Big One enjoyed wearing it too, even though it was a bit old-fashioned by then–she has always liked those olde-worlde things. Little One wasn’t so keen. So after that it just sort of hung around for a while because I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away but also by then it had developed a few minor defects, from moths I think (it is pure wool) so I couldn’t give it away either. So it just hung around, being moved from place to place, for years! Honestly I don’t understand why I couldn’t throw it out, but each time I picked it up I would end up just putting it down again somewhere. Finally I have decided it really has to go, and to make sure I actually do it this time I have cut it up. I’ve saved a few pieces still but cut the rest into smaller bits and put it on the compost heap. Do you have anything like this that you just hang onto for no particular reason? Before my wife became disabled, she was a quilter. We would save all the children's worn out clothes, cut then into squares and turn them into quilts. It's hard to really throw away things with memories attached to them. It's nice to be able to reuse them and make something new that still holds those memories. We still have tubs full of squares and fabric and saved treasures. Sadly, it's not likely to ever be used. I hope one day someone can use all the crafting items we've squirreled away here over the years.

I have done something similar in the past. When my own favourite clothes wore out, I made some of them into clothes for the girls when they were small, and later re-made them into dolls' clothes. It's kind of a way of getting rid of things incrementally! I have made some of my favourite things into cushion covers and bean bags.

That's so cute - and looks to be in great condition! Oh yes, I have quite a few things that I can't part with. I think we keep these things for sentimental reasons . . . the memories will always be there, but maybe we feel guilty for tossing the physical items away.

We all like to keep things from our childhood. I still have some toys from my grandmothers house

I have a couple of things that I hang onto. My oldest is a map of this part of the world I was given at school way back in the late 60s

Absolutely! so many of us have those sentimental items we just can’t let go of, even if they’ve long outlived their practical use. That little coat sounds like it carried layers of memory I have a few things like that too such as old letters, and a worn-out scarf.

I have a pair of my mom’s shoes, and while a lot of the things of hers I kept have purpose, I don’t know why I kept these shoes. They could still do someone else good, but they sit in my closet, taking up space. I mean, who keeps a pair of general shoes, even from a deceased loved one.

There are a few clothes that remind me of days gone by but not what I wore when I was child

I have some of the blankets I used for Pretty that we use for cleaning rags... I also have the blanket and pillow set I crocheted for her bed when she was 7 stored in a plastic tote out in the garage. I gave away her old clothing when she outgrew it. Stuff now just goes to the local thrift store when we're done with them.
