Gorge Rock is a natural rock formation just a few miles from Corrigin in Western Australia.
Settlers in the area moved a hall from the goldfields region to Gorge Rock in 1920 and for the next ten years, regular dances were held in the hall. The hall was demolished in 2007 as it was falling into ruin. A school opened in 1922 but it was difficult to keep the minimum number of eight students and it finally closed in 1936.
In 1956, a group of farmers got together and, after a huge amount or work, managed to build a swimming pool by damming up the end of the gully. A diving board was placed at one end. The pool was allowed to empty out each summer and it would fill naturally with the first rains.
Gorge Rock was once a thriving community with tennis courts and a football field. It’s now simply a picnic spot with toilets and information boards. There is a wonderful view from the top of the rock.

I wish there were community dances again. That would be fun.

Corrigin in nearby and I think it is better farming country in that area. Small farms weren't really viable and those that were battling were bought out by neighbours. The railway line goes through Corrigin too so that would have had an impact.
