Starting off an early morning walk on the weekend with this sign

Aussie walk

This happens only in Australia. We decided to have a morning walk along a park called Dry Creek Trail and were greeted with this sign right at the entrance. Well, if you're in Australia, you're used to these signs. The kids were disappointed they didn't see any snakes though. I really don't want to have a face off with an Aussie snake, even though most are non poisonous. Have you ever had an encounter with a snake?

My cat brought a garden snake to me once. I yelled for my husband to get it and let it go.

What color was it? How did you know it wasn't venomous.

Oh, yes... I grew up on a farm in the Ozark Mountains. There are snakes all the time. Most are non-venomous but several species do have venom that can affect or kill a human. We also had to watch for snakes when we were swimming in streams, rivers or lakes here. My brothers and I were told to watch where we step and stay away from snakes... Sometimes you can't see them in the grass here or in the pastures... That's always fun!

At most of the rest stops in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Eastern Washington, there are signs warning of rattlesnakes in the vicinity and to stay on the path. But there isn't an abundance of deadly rattlers, they just want people to stay on the paths. I was told this same story at rest stops in each of the states that I mentioned. I grew up in a place with all kinds of snakes but very few that would be considered deadly. There were venomous varieties but they weren't capable of killing you. Unless thirty of them all attacked at once. I would pay attention to that sign if I ran across it.

I'm always on the lookout for snakes in the bush but I'm not terrified of them.

I do feel scared as I can't differentiate which ones are poisonous.

Yes. Three times that I can remember. One was a copperhead (poisonous) in Dismal Swamp in Virginia, one was a black snake in the Florida Keys and one was a garter snake right by our house. They don't scare me. I've held snakes before...one was a huge python at an animal park. I held the heavy middle part of the snake; and the kids held the two ends.

I've held a python a couple of times, but that was because I knew the animal keeper would save me if things went downhill.
