Pandan leaves also known as biryani leaves are used by some to give ordinary rice that exotic flavour only basmati rice provides Basmati rice is expensive but the pandan leaves when added while making biryani gives the biryani that exotic smell when ordinary rice is used, and the guests feel gratified. I think that is cheating What say?

@allknowing No, I'm not missing anything. I'd throw up if I knew I was eating something with rice in it.

@garymarsh6 We have choices. I just said that not many would detest the smell of basmati rice. Not many would detest Channel NO. 5 perfume. I do not like it I get a headache

@allknowing Don't you believe that! I hate the smell of Jeera & coriander although bizarrely l like the smell of Madras curry which she does not like! I prefer Thai red curry myself with lemon grass & red chilli.

We have Pandan growing in a pot and yes, we put it in the rice while cooking. Gives that nice aroma.

@allknowing Wow, I was just sharing- meaning whatever kind of rice expensive or not, we add pandan simply because we like it — not to pass it off as some five-star rice. But sure, let’s overthink boiled rice lol

@pitsipeahie You will have to use white rice and then put a couple of pandan leaves to get the basmati effect, Boiled rice will not pass as basmati rice

I read your earlier post sometimes back also mentioning about the same. Now that you have posted the picture, I have this kind of leaves in my garden. How to make sure that it is pandan leaves?

I am more familiar with pandan leaves but now i know what biryani now means. The aroma of the leaves when it is mixed with rice when cooking can give a different flavor to rice. They are like the jasmine rice aroma. I am not sure what is basmati is in our place.
