Tsunami alerts triggered for entire U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii after massive 8.7 quake strikes off Russia

Mojave, California

Big 8.7 Earthquake, , could have been updated to 8.8. Regardless its seems like its the 8th biggest earthquake ever recorded. The west coast of mainland US. is in Tsunami warning until 11.40 PM tonight give or take depending on area.. Hawaii, seems a lot more measured with first waves hitting it at 7:17 pm their time. Alaska 4:46 , which is not that far away if a Tsunami were to hit. Moral of the story stay off the beach if you live on the west coast till July, 30th, noon sounds good to me.

You didn't even tell us you were planning on going to Russia! What did you do? I hope the tsunami threat doesn't amount to much along the coasts.

Russia would be the last place I ever go even if they paid me. Japan says they getting hit with a 10 foot wave at least/ It may not sound that bad but they are strong and Japan is crowded. The waves in the ocean look nasty there now.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, but Japan also has nifty seawalls, those things holding it down for now. I go How go how come we do not have those?

@crossbones27 It doesn't help that Japan is mostly lowland areas until you get to the mountains... They flood easily. I hope they don't have too many deaths there.

@franxav East Coast of Russia. it was a peninsula The epicenter hit a lot of land. It was in ocean and deep but hit a lot of the land. I am not sure the names of Russian cities, but sister looked it up, about a 180,000 people live in that area.

We got tsunami warnings frequently when I was stationed at Pearl Harbor, but nothing of this severity.

It sounds pretty serious, Hawaii is making shelters and they showed video of under ground parking lots already taking in water.

They are pretty rare other than Japan. Even Alaska who has a few in their history of recorded.

@crossbones27 At least there is some warning so people can move to higher ground beforehand.

Calif, isn't getting hit from what I can tell I've been watching the live streams on you tube, I think most the west coast is safe from getting hit too bad.

@2ndchances24 Actually, it did and Hawaii did and Believe Alaska did. I think they need to educate people better on Tsunami 's, because people think its like 1 to 3 monster waves. I did too kind of, I was not totally educated but knew they look harmless, until they not. Its more like it just messes with the tide. There can be monster waves, but most Tsunami 's are just water build up from the ocean crashing around from earthquake. It does not necessarily create monster waves, but makes the tide change on the coast and it becomes strong as all hell also. They say this little city in California saw a 4 foot Tsunami and is the largest recorded in continental US. Not sure if it is in history, but kind of sounds like it. Hawaii did get the worse with 5.7 foot one but did not really do any major damage. They say this one in California caused 1 million dollars of damage to a dock in the harbor. People were again all about the wave, but as many pointed out. Harbor water is always still. It never has water coming in like waves unless something happened.

@crossbones27 that's why I watch videos on things like that & why I don't live around or close to water that can cause harm like that.
