As it is now the school holidays here in the UK, there are lots of reports on tv about children, their care and activities provided.
They have just been talking to an owner of a soft play centre, who was saying that they always hope for rain during the holidays so that parents take their children to them, as they know the take them elsewhere if the weather is good. He says their profits are down.
Personally I think that there is a place for both indoor and outdoor activities ….
You have to think about what is provided and the cost.
Outdoor ….parks …
These are free.
We live close to a huge arboretum, there are lots of climbing and playground equipment for all ages, tennis courts, a lake with ducks to feed, grassy areas for picnics, running, ball games. There is a water / splash park. There is a skateboard area too.
Perfect for great weather days and totally free.
You get natural light, fresh air, natural vitamins
You can learn about plants, flowers and trees…..
Indoor soft play centres
We took the Grandkids to one of these last weekend.
There are bouncy castles, football pitches, inflatables, rope swings.
It cost £16 each for 1 hour = £32
It cost £2 each for a cake = £4
It cost £3.50 each for a slush puppie = £10.50
It cost £5.50 each for a portion of chips and a pizza ( I admit the portions were great and it fed all four of us so that was good value ) = £11
Total cost for 1 hour £57.50
I think when you look at indoor v outdoor you can see why people are not going to the indoor venues so much ….
Anyway , I would be interested in your thoughts ….

I love being outdoors. I've just come back from visiting family. We live in the Midlands and we visited family on the south coast. We were very lucky with the weather so we could spend a lot of time outside. While there are lots of natural areas like the beach, country parks, and other places, there are also other outdoor activity places that are expensive to get in!
I do find a lot of the indoor places are not very good value for money. At least with the outdoor stuff (for example, we visited a farm with our grandchildren), you can stay as long as you like. I've never been a big fan of soft play centres. £16 for one hour is a lot. I suppose it's not too bad if it includes everything you mentioned.
I definitely prefer playing outside where possible.

I am in the Midlands too ….
I think they have put the price up recently , I agree it is a lot of money. I would much prefer them to be outside.

Well I think
Let them play outside for free what ever the weather like we had to when we were kids
Parks, beaches, free.
But wait, then parents would need to put the phones down to supervise and god forbid maybe take part

I only know about a few of the activities kids can do in our city... I haven't had "kids" in almost 20 years. I do know there are four or five parks in our little city with swings, slides, jungle gyms (climbing areas), large areas suitable for picnics as well as several gazebos with picnic tables under the roof, walking/running tracks, a large skate park for skateboarders and roller skaters/rollerbladers, several baseball/softball parks.... And that's all I can remember offhand. All those are free.
