There was a time I had loads of handkerchiefs matching my outfits. Yes Matching my outfits as I would see to it that others saw what handkerchief I was carrying with me. I still remember when one of my bosses returned from his business tour from Swirtzerland he brougfht me chocolates and a handkerchief It was considered just gifting handkerchiefs was unlucky or brought tears And believe me that is the only handkerchief I now have. I no longer use handkerchiefs as facial tissues have taken over. But my husband never changed his habit What about you?

I never carried handkerchiefs with me when I was younger and now, I always have a soft paper towel folded up in my back pocket, just in case I need one for something.

@allknowing Dad always used handkerchief and mom always hated laundering them. It grossed her out to think what was in the water after cleaning them. She'd run his handkerchiefs as their own load through the washing machine. I don't blame her, as that would be nasty to me, too.

@DaddyEvil She could have washed them separately and not mix them with the other clothes.

In the packages sold in Switzerland to be given as a gift they add a coin, the coin is to "pay for them" so they do not bring bad luck. I still have one with a 1 cent Swiss coin. My aunt brought it to me when I was 6 years old, I never opened the package. I still have handkerchief and my husband always brings one with him. At home we use disposable handkerchiefs.

In my childhood, we were required to bring the handkerchieves so that we could have a hygiene habit. Of course today I think nobody will use handkerchieves any more. Tissues are much more convenient.
