US tariff on India. What does this mean?

The US has imposed 25% tariff on goods imported from India. To add to that there will be an extra import tax. Just because India is purchasing oil from Russia. Isn't that childish? It's like I'm told to buy pizza only from a certain shop. Just a backdrop - India and Russia share a very strong and time-tested strategic partnership. It has historical roots as well as bilateral co-operation spanning various sectors. And the diplomatic beginning was made - on April 13, 1947 - even before India got freedom. Also the 1971 Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace and Friendship. How can we forget this? In all these years they have been various governments and leaders in both Russia and India. And none of them dainted the friendship. How can this happen - what the US wants - just because one man is stubborn and arrogant. Do you have any views on this?

Trump's tariff strategy is stupid but what do you expect from a stupid man? What it means is that prices for products imported from India will now cost Americans more. The moron thinks that India pays the tariffs. Nope. The US importers do and then they pass that onto American consumers in the form of higher prices.

India, for decades, charged MASSIVE tariffs to the United States while being able to import goods to the United States duty free. That was never a fair deal. The reason the United States is imposing a tariff is only partially due to India's connection with Moscow. It is always funny to me, when we hear these complaints, that what gets talked about is what the U.S. is charging them. Not what they are charging US.

That's what I said in the discussion - someone doesn't want a bilateral trade to go on. So how is it fair to cut ties with Moscow when it has such a long history? Also how does it justify extra import tax just because we are trading with Russia? It's BILATERAL.

@porwest If the US is helping Ukraine and Russia is our friend, what does it mean? Unjust war? For Russia it was a threat of NATO's expansion towards them. And Ukraine joining them wasn't something they would take lightly. Because each nation has the right to protect their own boundaries. As for India purchasing oil from Russia and we directly or indirectly helping them... No. It's their bilateral. And we don't poke our nose in their matter. And India had abstained from voting on the Russian invasion matter. We never voted for them in spite of our age old friendship. We're telling India to pick which side they are on - India isn't yesterday's India now. It's our call. No one can ask us to pick sides.

@abhi_bangal Russia is engaged in an unjust war against Ukraine, destroying lives and destroying cities. India is indirectly or directly supporting that. Sometimes when your friends act up, you have to let them know they are acting up, and if they don't stop... You cut ties until they start behaving themselves. As for the import tax due to Russia, the United States is sending hundreds of billions of dollars of support to Ukraine. India's actions are sending money to Russia which is helping fund their war AGAINST Ukraine. The import tax, for that reason, makes absolute sense. We're telling India to pick which side they are on. If India wants the United States to play nice with them, there are terms and conditions. As there should be.

I think we are going to alienate many countries with these tariffs. It's sad and concerning.

Very rightly said. It's sad. But it's a reality.
