There’s so much “touristy” stuff along Route 66, most of which is grossly outdated. I guess that’s what makes it so appealing. If you go to “touristy towns” like Niagara Falls or Pigeon Forge, the “tourist traps” are state-of-the-art theaters or displays. The things that drew people off the road back in Route 66’s heyday were completely different. Take this. Please. (In best Henny Youngman voice. ) It’s a large soft drink bottle. It’s located at Pop’s Soda Ranch in Arcadia, Oklahoma, not too far from Oklahoma City. It lights up at night, and it’s really cool in those pictures. In the daytime, though, you just get a big Coke bottle with a straw. Why? Pop’s Soda Ranch has every flavor of soft drink you can imagine, and a few you can’t imagine. I saw one called “Kitten Piddle.” I didn’t dare ask what it might taste like. There was also a 170-calorie soft drink called “Pickle Juice.” No, thanks. Real pickle juice has no calories, and no doubt tastes better. (Sure, your kosher dills aren’t packed in carbonated water, but still…) I looked around but didn’t buy anything. That’s what usually happens in the wild world of tourist traps along Route 66. The large soda bottle in front of Pop’s in Arcadia, Oklahoma.

How interesting! I would probably spend an hour or more checking out all the odd flavored sodas in there!

I saw some that were similar to things like Wink or Fresca.

@FourWalls I used to like Fresca when I was in a certain mood. Don't think I ever tried Wink.

That one is pretty tame compared to some things I've seen along Route 66... Sometimes Pretty and I would stop and explore when we went driving somewhere if it looked interesting to us. There are several buffalo farms along I-44 that had interesting uhm... junk... (I think they called it "bric-a-brak"?) It looked like a junk yard that had been "prettied up" for tourists. Old time "stuff" for sale like dad and mom had stored in the out-buildings on the farm when I was growing up. (Canning jars full of old screws, nails, washers, bolts with the lids glued to a board on the ceiling of one building. I was strictly told to LEAVE THEM ALONE! ) I never saw anything in any of them I wanted or needed. *shrug* And we'd drive on after looking around.

Yeah, I guess they sell them by the name’s shock value. Poor people probably disappointed to discover it tastes like Sprite.

We enjoyed stopping along the Road 66 to check for artifacts and visiting small museums.

I enjoy stopping at places where there are a lot of things closer together. I quickly discovered that ONE item featured isn’t worth going to see.

@FourWalls - I agree, I stopped going to one place only to find one item.

It's funny the things people will drive to see. In Australia people will drive miles to see the Big Pineapple (which was originally just a giant model of a pineapple!)

It’s fun along the way. HOPEFULLY nobody would set this or anything else along the road as their sole destination. But then, I’ve spent three days out looking at covered bridges before, so what do I know.

It was also a good pit stop for the restroom. I looked at their food prices online, and they were horrid. But there was no shortage of people at the counter, eating.
