A story about Van Morrison

Our son told us another story from his double bass playing days. I’m not too sure on the details but he, along with a number of others, were rehearsing for some sort of concert with Van Morrison. Apparently, Van can be a bit grumpy at times, often runs late for rehearsals and sometimes doesn’t turn up at all. Some of those in the orchestra were quite young and a bit intimidated by his star status. One was a young oboe player. An oboe has two reeds which are short pieces of bamboo which are attached to a mouthpiece and through which the player blows. When you’re not actually playing, the reeds need to be kept moist and the girl had placed her reeds in a glass of water while they were waiting for Van to arrive. I think she had removed them before Van suddenly came storming in, saw the glass and promptly swigged the water. Everybody kept very quiet. The photo is of our son but this time playing in a traditional Irish group. Sorry about the quality

Wow!! He was quite popular. It must have been a good opportunity for these to play with Van Morrison. Sad that people working with him had to suffer because of his star status and attitude. Good that no one said anything when he gulped that water. It might have created another ugly unpleasant scene if he threw a stardom tantrum.

Can you imagine if the reeds were still soaking and Van didn't notice?

@BarBaraPrz He could easily have choked if he'd swallowed a reed - or it might have been difficult to pass! lol

He has a 9-5 job now but occasionally plays for weddings. He plays banjo in traditional groups in pubs on the weekend but it's not a regular thing.

I understand that there are a lot of stories floating around about Van Morrison... One I heard can't be repeated on myLot since it is adult in nature. I hope your son played with him when Van Morrison was in a good frame of mind.

He only did it the once. He said Morrison had a bit of a reputation. When I saw him in the waxworks in Dublin I was surprised how short he was. I never knew much about him.

@JudyEv Yeah, I believe Van Morrison was 5' 7" tall (170.18 cm).

@DaddyEvil Which isn't very tall for a man. I think Vince is 5'7" .

That’s hilarious! Wonder if Van sang like an oboe all night.

@judyev He certainly is an ostrogobulous wee character (grumpy old git). I think it’s best not to-one told him he was drinking oboe spit.

@JudyEv My son just moved out of the street Van grew up in in East Belfast. He really got fed up with people commenting on it. His father in law also went to school with him.

@xFiacre We saw his effigy or whatever in the Dublin Waxworks. He didn't look anything like I expected him to look. Although I'd heard of him, I don't think I'd ever seen a photo of him.

I hope they were able to laugh about it later.

At least she got the reeds, it could have been very awkward! Your son and his friends get to hob-nob with the stars don't they?!

That was the most hob-nobbing they did really although they toured with some Irish jazz groups. One of his first tours was with an accordion player. They played to full houses in Spain, I think. I was staggered that people would go to listen to an accordion player. It was a long time ago.

The best of performers are temperamental and worse. Sounds like Van may have had a hangover. What a fun story. Thanks for sharing.

They can have a very inflated view of their own importance.
