Jim'n Nick's Was a Let Down

If I hadn't mentioned it before, but I am sure I did, we made a trek to Memphis, Tennessee with my mom, sister, and my aunt to see Graceland. My wife and I have been there before, and so had my sister, but my mom and aunt, who were always big time Elvis fans, had not. They're not getting any younger, and so, checking that box off on their bucket lists was well in good time. On our first night in Memphis on Sunday we tossed around some ideas for places to eat and settled in on a place there called Jim'n Nick's Bar-B-Q, which looked pretty good. But it was a bit of a letdown when we got there as the waitress informed us when we sat down that they were out of a few items on the menu. "A few, she said, which I emphasized because she went on to say they were out of beef, chicken and turkey. I mean, that's almost the entire animal kingdom of animals we eat, you know. So, that meant our choices were limited to fish and pork. We'd have gone somewhere else, but it was late, and we were hungry, and so we just decided what to eat based on the little that was left to choose from. My wife and I had pulled pork dinners, and my sister and aunt had ribs. My mom chose catfish. According to my sister and aunt, the ribs were fatty and chewy and not impressive at all. Our pulled pork was fine, but honestly nothing to write home about, and mom seemed to enjoy her fish. We decided it would probably not be a place to go back to if we are ever in the area again. ***Picture is one we took of the actual facade.

I've been to restaurants like that before... I try not to go at the end of the day because they don't throw away stuff they cooked beforehand until the end of the day. You may have gotten some of that instead of freshly made stuff. I hope you all had a good time on your trip, otherwise.

@porwest Do you go on Yelp and review the restaurants you eat at? Pretty and I used to do that before the pandemic. We've only been out to eat twice since the pandemic and my brother took us out to Braums for burgers and fries once. It was okay but not as good as they used to be. The other time, Pretty and I ordered Springfield-style Cashew Chicken at a friend's restaurant. It's always good there.

@porwest We never checked reviews before going to a restaurant. We didn't want to be limited by someone else's thoughts about the place or the food. I don't know if we'll start reviewing restaurants again now or not. It was fun but was just our opinion of the places we went.

@DaddyEvil I don't use Yelp at all and rarely ever even look at reviews. If I have a good or bad experience I may blog about it, but that's about it.

There's nothing worse than having a bad experience at a place that is known for their good food. I have never been to Jim'n Nicks BBQ, but they do sell some of their products at our local grocery store and they do seem to sell well.

@porwest Yeah, you should at least give them one more try, to see if they can redeem themselves.

Yeah, I am pretty sure this is a chain. I am sure their food is generally good. But this was just a bad experience. I have a three strikes rule, so even though I said I wouldn't give them another go, I might not make an actual decision until I have three bad experiences. Especially if it's a chain, maybe we just hit a bad location.

Pork can be a bad choice if it is too fat. I looathe restaurants that keep on having a fake menu.

It is what it is. Jim'n Nick's won't be back on my list the next time I am near one. I think it's a chain, but I am not sure.

It's very disappointing when that happens, and you're too hungry and short of time to go elsewhere. Hope you found better places the other nights.

We did, and it more than made up for our less than stellar visit to Jim'n Nick's for sure.

Reminds me of looking through the ratings book with the recruiter: everything I saw that I was interested in, he said, “No, it’s closed to women.” I handed him the book and said, “Why don’t you tell me what’s OPEN to women?” That would be a cool idea, though: “Here’s what we’ve got left, take it or leave it.” That is a problem with southern BBQ places: they stay open until the meat runs out. Some places aren’t open but 2-3 hours.
