It’s that time of year…

It’s that time of year when, after waiting eagerly for some fresh home-grown produce, we get overwhelmed, in this case with climbing beans and courgettes (zucchini). Last week was even worse because Little One and I were away (and Big One is away somewhere else) so my partner was all by himself eating beans and courgettes every day! We are back now and needed to catch up a bit so as well as eating plenty of vegetables for dinner I also made some loaves of courgette bread and a batch of courgette and chocolate chip cookies – which Little One loves, even though she hates courgettes in general! So that’s used up a good few of the stockpile, especially as I have had a couple of visitors so was able to feed some to them. Now I just need to use up some beans in interesting ways. Very nice! If you have any older family members or neighbors, you can always palm off extra zucchini and green beans on them.

Our only older family really are my partner's parents, they have an allotment and they just palmed off a bag full of courgettes, tomatoes and sweetcorn on us! I have offered them around and a friend took some this morning but a lot of other people either have their own or are away or just about to go away!

@Fleura If you have room in your freezer, bread and cookies all freeze well.

Is there no way to sell your produce?

They always taste better knowing you have grown them yourself. Well done, bon appetite!

That's true, and I shouldn't complain when we actually have something to harvest even after all the problems of drought, slugs, bugs, deer etc!

Those cookies turned out great! You’ve been making good progress with the stockpile.

Sounds like you’ve had quite the veggie harvest! Hope you discover some fun new recipes for those beans too!

Yesterday I made a 'Spanish omelette' but with beans instead of peppers; it was nice.

When you grow your own produce it seems it's always either a feast or a famine.

This is why preserving in all its forms was so important in the 'old days' - and I'm still doing it. Just picked all our damsons yesterday and made jam.

@Fleura Mum made oodles of plum jam each year and we also bottled peaches and apricots mainly.

That's the great thing about veggies in cakes and cookies they don't taste like veggies. Great way to get children to eat them

They're her favourites, she chooses to make these in preference to 'normal' chocolate chip cookies.

It's either feast or famine when it comes to produce. Will you be freezing some beans?
